i've always heard they never got better than 8 m.p.g. but i don't know how true that is. my 396/402 was very mild and with a 4 speed got 14 m.p.g. on the freeway, but not too much worse in town.

there used to be a joke in the early 60's, chevy had put a v6 in some of thier trucks, but were geared so steep that people when asked would say, it gets 10, 10 uphill, 10 downhill, 10 with a tail wind....

i'm not sure how stout your set up is, but i've heard pretty impressive m.p.g. with the 5 and six speeds...

I would think something wrong if you are gettting that kind of mileage. I have a 468, approx. 500 HP, 750dp, 4 speed Muncie and I recently changed from 4:10 gears to
3:31's. In July I drove from Prince Rupert British Columbia to Vancouver, a trip just under 1000 miles and I averaged about 12.5 miles per Imperial gallon. The Canadian (imperial)gallon is a little larger than the U.S. gallon. U.S. gallon is 3.7 litres and the Imperial is 4.4 litres. I havenot figures out my around town kind of milage but because I am always "playing" a little I would think I am probably under 8

68 with medium 468, 3.55, .064 OD. 8mpg messing around, short hopping the whole tank. 15mpg at 70 on the freeway. 21mpg being careful at 55 on the freeway.

69 Chevelle, later 454, stock with mild cam, high rise intake, headers, 650 Edelbrock AVS, TH400, 2.73 gears, 27" tires. The car has A/C, stereo plus amp and four speakers, PS, and a trunk 1/2 full with tools, spare parts, and fun gear.

About 10 mpg in the city, 15 mpg at 60 mph with a granny foot. Minus 1 mpg for every 5 mph over 60.

Our L78 4.10 geared Chevelle gets about 12 mpg (Imperial) on the highway. Anything less that that and you probably have timing and/or carburetor problems.

I suspected it would be seen with skepticism :) It's got a BG Mighty Demon 750 DP annular, tuned to 14.1ish with a wide band AFR gauge. It really, really does do that well. I have had tanks of 5-6mpg before.

I just took and put over 250 miles on my car in one day with the combo that's in my signiture and it knocked down about 14 mpg. I could have probably had gotten 16 or better out of it, but it really sucks the fuel when I put my foot in it. I bet straight highway driving, and behaving I could get 20 or better out of it

With a properly set up carb and running a lean idle (even 1/8 turn on the screws makes a big difference) you'll do much better - I'd think you only need to work on timing and the carb, assuming nothing else is wrong, to get in the low teens.

I get around 13-14 average, close to 18 doing 75 on the highway.

my ss396 375hp 4 speed got 15mpg on trip to Myrtle beach a few years ago. two people in car and luggage maybe 500 pounds around 65 mph on secondary roads and three miles was stop and go for construction. There was 8 of us together on the trip and about every time a construction worker had a chanes to tell me they said I had a great sounding car. I was third in line with several other tri 5s Chevys and a couple early 60s Chevys I had the youngest car in the bunch at 1968

I average 19 with my LS1 conversion - Mosly city driving. On the longer highway trips I get 23-25. I have not done much tuning on it yet, but I'm happy with how it's running. 350 HP LS1, so the power is there when I need it.

I got 29 in my '04 vette running 80 MPH for a 5 hour trip - 510 miles on one tank of gas. Gotta love the LS1's ability.

'67 with 540, 1050 Dominator, solid roller, Brodix BB2 heads, 3.90 gears, 29.5 tall tires, and a 3800 converter.

12.0-13.2 consistently, cruising at 3200-3500rpms. 10-10.5 around town.

Actual measured mpg, BTW
