I have a 70 SS Chevelle convertible and I can see an 802 in grease pencil or chalk on the hood latch assembly. Any ideas?

What assembly plant? Different plants did different things.

It is likely the original selling dealers stock number. That is the only time I see numbers on or near the hood and/or latch. I have seen them written on air cleaner snorkel and in the door jamb as well.

I would think the 802 may be hand written on the build sheet as the sequence number if it's not the stock number.

I have seen the buildsheet sequence number on the firewall, frame and top of the heater box but never on the hood latch though there is no reason it couldn't have been put there. Obviously the buildsheet would answer a lot of questions.
