I own a 1967 chevelle malibu and it has the original radio, which did work at one time. It however does not work anymore. What are the most common type of malfunctions for most am car radios? Is it worth fixing or should I just shop for a working replacement? I mean how hard can it be to fix, after all its only an am radio. Thanks

With a meter, scope, schematic, and a regulated power supply, they aren't that hard to work on. Since it's mono it's hard to tell if the problem is in the power supply or amplifier without opening it up and doing some troubleshooting.

The most common part to fail in my experience is the output transistor. Many times in working on the radio and hooking them up the speaker wires will get shorted. If you have replaced the factory 10 ohm speaker with an 8 or 4 ohm, it will eventually blow the output transistor.
