I have a Ramjet 502 with a fairly big street cam.Compression is
8.9-1.Hooker headers into 3" pipes to mufflers just over the axle and then into 3 1/2" tailpipes to bumper. The mufflers were 3" Pro Flows. This combo was loud and had that ratatat machine gun sound.I hated it.We changed the mufflers to Magnaflow 3" #17744.Centre in offset out. These mufflers actually neck down to 2 1/2" inside.I was hoping this would make them even quieter. My muffler guy said that because the mufflers were not marked as to there in or out pipe you could put them on either way.We installed themwith offset in and centre out (backwards). We also added a H pipe. The car sounds much better but it is not much quieter on the outside. On the inside it is quite reasonable.
I'd like to quiet it down on the outside and was considering adding a pair of bullet style mufflers or resonators.I was also considering changing the tailpipes to 3" but I'm not sure 1/2" will make much of a difference.I don't mind giving up some HP to gain a quieter car.I'm just going to open the headers at the track to make all the power.
What do you think?
Thanks

My 12909 Magnaflows are straight through and no neck down at all. Theses are 3.5s though. If you don't care about HP loss try super turbo mufflers.

#17744 you say? I don't know which ones those are, because I just looked on their website, and didn't see that part number anywhere.

Mike is correct, the 17744 is a Dynomax Turbo. It is only 14" length and does neck down to 2.5" internals. Also, center/offset is most restrictive flow design in a turbo muff. Muffler to get in the Dynomax line was 17770 (3" offset/offset, 20" case with 3" core) Might have been discontinued. You can fit up to a 22" case in there. Did it on my '69, in my garage, muffler shop would have no problem. Dynomax #17665 is 22" case, 3" offset/offset with 3" core. Listed as Dodge Durango replacement. These are quiet. Can also fit the 5" x 11" x 22" case Magnaflow in there. Ran the Flowmaster 70 Series behind the 540". 22" case, 3" offset/offset. This was amazingly quiet both at idle and cruise. Unforetunate, the 14" muffler you ended up with is a poor choice.

Sorry.Too many pops before bed time;).They are Dynomax 17744.I picked these mufflers because they were a direct replacement for what I already had size wise.My Monte has a back half with a subframe. It doesn't allow much room ahead of the axle and the mufflers are just above the rear axle with limited space for a larger case.Any full size muffler ahead of the axle will hang down, which I don't want.

2 1/2" internal turbo mufflers are gonna cost you some power with 500cubes.
and uncapping the headers at the track may not gain anything (since youre loosing collector length) unless you have 18" header extensions to bolt in place.
bad deal all around.
I'd do some good 3" mufflers like magnaflows
with 3" tailpipes.
and yes tailpipe diameter will make a diff in noise.
