How about you take the air cleaner off and supply a picture of the choke linkage. You may have a mechanical choke that requires a cable. We all know what an AFB looks like from afar.

I’ve got an old AFB with a mech choke that I never hooked up. Can you just buy an electric choke kit and add it on?
We need a better picture . That does not look like an old AFB . it looks like the later ones they sold in the aftermarket 625 CFM An old AFM has a vacuum choke with the pipe running to the exhaust manifold or a weell on the intake. There is also a large Idle air adjustment screw in between the two fuel idle mixture screws The last time GM used an AFB on a production cars was 1966 and i believe that only Pontiac was the last G/M division to use that carb . A note here is that they made a small bolt on throttle linkeage piece that when bolted on the same Carb could be used on a Chevrolet . I have one of those universal AFB,s and it came off a 66 Catalina . Alex

Use the cable and control it manually. This way, by opening the choke after 45 seconds of running, you save your engine from havine raw gasoline washing away the thick oil..

You're missing the choke assembly and the linkages. If it was me, I'd pick up a couple Carter parts carbs off eBay before I'd buy Edelbrock.

But then again I'm a hoarder.

AFBs are fun to tune, I've always had good luck with the usual seasonal adjustments and basic maintenance on a few different cars. An air fuel gauge makes it easier.

As the others have said, you need to get a mechanical cable or an electric choke setup for your carb. The butterfly is basically held open with the spring. I don't run a choke on my carb and it starts fine at any outside temp, I only have to feather the gas until it warms a bit and idles on its own.
