Used to love going to the Old Orangeburg drag strip but deteriating track conditions and "crowd control" issues forced me to stop going there.

The big news is the track has been totally redone with concrete down the length of the track(still 1/8 mile I think)!!! If they improve the "crowd control" issues I'll be going back!!!

Here's some pictures of the "slab"

Big James....My kids live in near Beaufort. I heard the Savannah track is closed????...is there another track closer to Beaufort than Orangeburg? I would like to visit a track on one of the weekends that I am down there. Looks like they are going to make that into a very nice facility. It's not to far from Beaufort, might be worth the trip up to check out the action if there isn't anything closer

There used to be a track in Dorchester County. I think it may still be in operation, some of the locals should know about it. Just a typical backwoods track but the last time I was there it was in good shape.

The Savannah track still races I believe.

James, what kind of crowd control problems? Drunks and fights? Or safety on how close they could bet to the track.

Both, pretty rowdy crowd, open gambling/flashing money by spectators. They also allowed crowds to gather right next to/behind the cars on the starting line. I can get rowdy myself at times but I've seen some bad incidents in the past. I could deal with it but not a place to take a gf or wife untill I security is improved.

Talk is this problem will be delt with but only time will tell. I'm impressed with what they're doing to the track so I'm optimistic.

James, I have spent some time in Orangeburg working. I've never been to the track there but knowing a little about the area, I can imagine how rowdy it would be at the track. Have you ever been to Ware Shoals Dragstrip? It's a decent 1/8 mile track about 10 or 12 miles from my house. I have saw you post about going to the Jackson dragstrip. I spent a lot of time there in the mid and late 70s.

Mike,
I haven't heard anything about Savannah in a while but I was out of the loop for the last year. I have heard that there is an 1/8 mile track outside of Charleston, Summerville maybe?
I'll check with the local car club and see whats up with the tracks.

the one in berkely county, also 1/8th mile, used to be called cypress gardens changed ownership last year. i think they call it low country dragway now? not sure about that. they spent some bucks on the track and grounds and really got it in great shape. it is pretty much a family type place with some tailgating on friday test and tune night. decent races on saturday nites. if you live in columbia big guy you would be about an hour and a half but if you want to come down some nite just let me know when you will be there. as far as the one in dorchester i have heard of it but havent been there. i will see what i can find out about it.

Never been to the Ware Shoals track, I'm still hoping to make it down to Jackson for a few runs in the next few weeks. A family illness prevented me from going when I had planed around Thanksgiving.

Sounds like a good time to me!
I know of a few bros that have won a couple of bucks on a certain white Chevelle at a local 1/8 mi track here. ;)

Hi Kevin,
My youngest son and his wife live out on St. Helena and the other one used to live on Gay street. He has recently moved to another location, but are still in Beaufort across the Broad river from town. I'll have to see where exactly. I make the trek down a couple of times a year. Where do you live? They have both told me they have seen a couple of hot Chevelles running around down there.

Mike,
one of the local car club guys told me today that the track in Savannah closed for good last week.
Kevin

I thought I had heard that from someone recently, or read it somewhere, just can't recall...must be getting old. Thanks
