I just recently worked on my ignition issue when it come to spark and now I'm getting combustion, but it just backfires out of the carburetor and fails to turn over. I have made sure that my plug wires are hooked up in correct order. I have removed the old fuel tank and hooked up new auxiliary fuel and was hand pumping it into the carburetor. I got it to turn over twice and that was it. My old fuel pump still works and was wondering if I should try use that to pump fuel to the carburetor. I'm just sort of stuck now and could use some advice. This car is a 1966 Chevelle with a 283 and probably hasn't run since the early 90's.

I also just rebuild and cleaned the carburetor.

Sounds like your timing is off. Have you verified your rotor is pointing to #1 on the compression stroke to get you in the ballpark? I pulled my distributor the other day to do some maintenance and had the same issue until I got it back in time.

Of course, if this has been sitting for almost 30 years, you could certainly have other issues going on.

I just had a similar issue on a little 318 Dodge we put in a friends car, before putting the engine in I walked thru with the kids doing the car how to set up your timing while on the stand...quite embarrassing as it would not even cough when we tried to start it, I advanced the crap out of it and it tried to start. I used the balancer stock marks to set timing and never checked top dead center on the #1 Piston, this was a crate engine and we were a little rushed. The balancer was off by nearly 30 degrees, we set top dead center made new marks on the balancer and it fired right off.

That is a great comparison picture Dave (y) a mix-up between early and late balancers & pointers can mess people up without even realizing it.That picture is a big help.
