Can someone explain to me the diferance in various 750 CFM carbs and recomend something?
I was looking at getting a new holley 4160 750. A buddy of mine is running a street demon 750. Then I see the there are several different holley 750s and there is a considerable price difference between all of them $250- $600+.
I am running a mild 454, .30 over, 11-1 compression, I don't have the cam specs but it's a decent crane, hotter than RV but not a full race. Edelbrock performer 2 intake. 396 oval port heads.

Thanks

They are mainly different level of builds...the HP carbs are a little more refined. The Ultra HP are more yet. You can get a double pumper (mechanical secondary) or vacuum secondary. Honestly for what you are running, if you can get past not having a 'double pumper' carb, just get a basic 750 vacuum sec. carb...list # is 3310. They are one of the least expensive carbs, but one of the best all around performing carbs. No frills, nothing fancy...just something that works really well, and wont cost you too much.

I agree with Johnny a 3310 is the most least expensive 750 out there. A nicer piece is the Street Avenger line. A 770 Street Avenger is a more done up version. It has a electric choke , a quick change spring cover for the vacuum secondaries , and dual metering blocks for tuning the jets on the seconday side. I would recommend the 770 Street Avenger.

I have a 7160 type Holley (80508-S It's the one from a ZZ430 Crate engine). I would stay away from that type and go to a 4150 type. The 4160 has metering plates instead of metering blocks, so there are no secondary jets to tune with, or you can add the metering block.

I'm currently planning on changing that over on mine, you can add a secondary metering block from Holley which will convert it to a 4150 type. This also means the fuel supply line (dual bowl) will also be longer than the 4160 type one.

I realize that I am just a crotchety old man and my mind is probably at least half gone but IMHO there are several million Quadrajet 4bbl carburetors out there all across America mouldering away in junk yards all of which are at least 750 CFM and each and every one of which can be made to be sweet street carbs. Well 90 % anyway. There are some smoggers out there that I'd walk past but most of them are good anyway.

Additionally they all share a common feature over buying a Holley...they're cheap to get and easy to set up. Done correctly they are a fantastic street carb.

Just to give you an idea of how easy it is to make one work well, I have a Qjet off of a 77 Cadillac Eldorado on my 383 and it works perfectly. The price was right...free. I got it while I was working in my last mechanics job in 1990. It was a reject. ( customer never wanted to see it again. I was happy to oblige. Free is always the best price.) I took care of the internal leaks and it has performed handsomely ever since.

Naturally it helps that I have rebuilt hundreds of caburetors over the years but that includes ALL types including pretty much every American brand and lots of foreign stuff too.

My father in law told me the same thing about the q jets. I just don't know anything about them. I just rebuilt the 4010 I had on it and think I just wasted $50 doing it. I need to replace it that's why I'm here asking around.
