I got a 70 chevelle malibu with a 350 and columb shift selector. when i go to start my car nothing hapens. i have to turn key like 15 times for it to crank over then its good to go. I replaced starter and did not help. When the key is on to accessory (one notch forward) my aftermarket gauges light up and my CD player goes on. but turn key one more, no start. some times i hear a click like starter engages but nothing happens. but it does not do it all the time. out of the 15 turns of the key just to start it it does it once, usually on the 5-7 turn of the key, ( u know what i mean?) i hate to drive it cause i dont want to get straned somewhere. So far i checked the neurtal saftey switch buy wiggling shifter while atemping to start car, and also starting it in another gear and nothing. Also replaced starter and added a heat shield and that did not help. checked cable from block to battery, batter to fender and bat to starter all clean and tight. My battery is good. i think it might be my key switch? but not sure how to check it, and dont really want to remove it yet, want to check the easy stuff first? I was wondering if you could help me out by listing stuff to check. ANY HELP would be really appreciated. THANKS

Did you try pulling a little harder on the column selector towards park as I suggested? This sometimes finds a better spot on the Neutral Safety Switch and lets the car start. If you replied back and I didn’t answer that’s because I haven’t been home and won’t be for a while.

Did the wife kick you out finally?

70chevy - the shift lever thing has stumped me before on more than one occasion. Where are you at in Indiana? If you're close to South Bend I can come and give you a hand.

It's was the middle of the afternoon for me and I was still at work. Didn't expect to get near a 'puter this early. The wife still keeps me. Says she put too many years trying to train my rear to start over again. Your turn is coming young dude.

It sort of sounds like a ground problem. Did you just install the motor??? Or has this just all of a sudden start happenening??
The reason I ask is because I had the same problem a few years back when I painted the frame and installed my new motor. The motor mounts were the ground for the block....once I painted the frame, the ground was gone. When I turned the key...my after market guages would light up but the car wouldn't start. Had to add a ground strap.

nope did not install the motor. On day it just started acting up. Some ones stated that i sould run a 4 gauge wire from the starter to the frame and start it. If it startes leave it and that will solve my problems? Any one know what i am talking about?

could be as easy as the netural switch is not adjusted .. or the wires to it aren't making good contact could also be the wire to starter solinoid is loose ..dirty ..check the purple wire to the purple /white wires on collem thats the netural safty switch you can conect these togather with a jumper wire & see if problem goes away ... remember to put car in PARK before doing this !!!!the next thing I'd look at is the wire on the S termial on the starter .. check the wire also its in a little metal tube right next to the exs pipe & I've seen more then a few melt from the heat
