I have a 70 chevelle with a small block 10:6 comp and when i run it for about 45 mins. and turn it off it wont start again..i need to crank the engine like for 15 seconds before it starts..
what could be my problem...
i assume its the batter cuz it only has 700 ca and 600 cca.

Does it crank at normal speed?

The battery has way more CCA than you need. When these cars were new, they recommended 1 cca for every cubic inch of displacement. You couldn't get a 600 CCA battery for automobiles until '76 or '77. 500--550 was as big as they made.

First Guess: fuel boils out of carb, causes flooding in the intake manifold, and the empty bowls take time to re-fill.

does it make a difference if you try to restart it right away or let it sit for a couple of minutes?
does it start up if you floor the gas pedal and hold it?
if so, the fuel is running out of the carb into the intake and flooding it out.
it could be something as simple as not enough base timing, too.

By any chance is there a small very thin spring that pushes the choke in the carburetor to closed after you shut the engine? If so, REMOVE IT. Choke should not close right away after the engine is warm long enough. It will cause the engine not to start right away. Hope this will help you.

CEZAR ARE you sure the distrrbutor is in phase and not a tooth off it will run 1 tooth offeither way . Does the engine seem to run hot. Does it crank hard when you are having this problem. These are signs the timming is off . do you have a heat shield at the starter. DO you have a High tork starter with a lrge armature 4 field coils and a shunt . Are you using 6 volt heavy cables to get all of the battery power to the starter.. YOU could just have a tired starter . Make sure you have a good ground strap body to frame check out all of these thing s plus what the other guy,s said . Hope this helps . ALEX

x2 - even though the bowls may not be empty, the gas will percolate out into the intake.

I had the same issue with a big block. I had routed the rubber fuel line up the front of the block and it was touching the block and intake in several places. On top of that I had one of those large plastic fuel filters laying on the intake as well. The fuel was getting heated up in the line and also in the carb itself (im sure caused just from engine heat alone).

I re-routed the fuel line and that took care of it. I thought about a heat shield under the carb but it never posed a problem again.
