i bought this as a freeway runner. my kid lives three hours south of me, and i figure what could handle the freeways better than a cop car with basically a vette engine, heavy suspension, heavy duty cooling systems, etc. it's only going to see about 3-600 miles a month. it should last quite awhile in this capacity. plus all the extra body mounts, should keep it from getting clapped out. i think for the $ it's a pretty cool buy...

Nice score Bill - can't beat the price! Aren't the rear doors and windows deactivated from the inside? I wonder what's involved in that?

nobody going to be back there anyway.... but i'll get to it at some point. right now i've just been reading up on the car, reverse cooling, plates in the seat to keep from being stabbed, extra body mounts, 4 bolt mains, they just built thes things to be tanks, oh...and 330 ft. lbs. of torque with 2.93 gears, factory true duels. this car makes me wish i had a few $ in the budget, seems like a few mods would really make this thing a beast. i already have my buddies drooling to drive this thing...

I bought a couple of 1996 models at auction from Tucson pd. They have some quirks, like odd modifications to the electrical systems to accomodate police stuff. Like the wire for high beams was cut; no biggie to fix. And I still have not figured out why the horns do not work. One quirk is the radio speakers. They are factory installed, but they do not work. You may need to install new speakers. I have a friend with two of these cars, and he has exactly the same experience. Apart from these little glitches, they are pretty good cars. They can keep up with traffic easily and handle quite well. It looks like you got a very good one.

I don`t know about the police version but my buddy has a 96 SS with the LT1 and it`s not the same engine as the vette. THe impala engines have iron heads where the vette and camaro both have aluminum. I want to say the iron LT1 was rated at 270hp but either way they are nice cars to drive.

I think the Impala LT-1 is rated at 260 and the Camaro/Vette is 285/300.

according to several articles on the net, the 9c1 cars get the aluminum heads, along with reverse cooling that cools the heads first then the block.

In 1994 the Caprice received the new-generation GM engines, including an optional detuned version of the Corvette's LT1 350 cu in (5.7 L) engine that put out 260 hp (194 kW) and 330 ft·lbf (447 N·m) of torque. The standard engine in all sedans even the 9C1 police cars, was the 200hp, L99 265 (4.3 L) V8. The LT1 was optional in the 9C1 police-package and standard in the wagon. The LT1 350 was standard in the civilian sedans, with the addition of the B4U towing package. The towing package also gave a heavy duty suspension nearly identical to the 9C1 police car suspension. 2.93 gears, heavy duty cooling, heavy duty rear drum brakes and positraction were standard with the towing package. The 265 (4.3 L) L99, and 350 (5.7 L) LT1 look nearly identical externally. Many 4.3 L99 equipped sedans are passed off as 5.7 LT1 cars. The 8th digit in the VIN number is the Engine code. W: 4.3 L L99, P: 5.7 L LT1. The 1994 Caprice's interior had a redesign which featured a Camaro steering wheel, digital speedometer and a new console. In 1994 Chevrolet also revived the Impala SS name by upgrading the 9C1 (police package) with a special body-colored grille, spoiler, C-pillar trim, special interior treatment and 17" alloy rims made by ROH on BF Goodrich 255/50/17 tires. In 1995 the sedan's rear quarter windows were redesigned to match the style of the Impala SS, and new wing mirrors were fitted. In 1996, the Impala SS was improved by moving the shifter to the floor console and adding analog gauges as opposed to digital gauges in the standard Caprice.

The Caprice 9C1 with the LT1 engine became one of the fastest and most popular modern day police vehicles. This vehicle established such strong devotion by many police departments that a cottage industry thrived in refurbishing Caprices for continued police service after GM discontinued production of the car.[citation needed]

theres a lot of info out there and some of it doesn't agree with others, i guess i'll have to wait till the car gets here to sort it all out...

makes sence that the cop cars would get the good engines. either way they are fun cars and you got a good deal. I would love to have one myself.

Personally I think the truck center caps look terrible but that's just me.
Maybe if it had the truck trim rings too I would like them.
I would love to have a cruiser like that, especially since it has the "P" engine.
Trim rings have a tendency to fly off during hard cornering, I think that's why most cop cars don't have them. But I do agree that it would look much better with them..

Bill, Great score!!!
