To much stuff is in the way I can't remove my oil filter!!! I guess this is the problem when you modify your car too much. Looks like I will have to remove the drivers side header to get the filter off. Excuse me if I sound mad, I am. I don't want to have to remove the header every time I do an oil change.

This was not a problem before I added the oil pan. The car now has a 7 qt oil oan, full length headers and the enormous bellhousing of the 6 speed.

Any suggestions?

Thanks

I sure am glad you posted this! I just went to look at mine and I may need to cut mine out! The good thing is my front clip is still off. The good news for me is that a short filter will correct my problem as the long filter comes down to within 1/4 inch of my headers.

I have not been able to spin off the filter yet. And the clearance is so close. Headers are really close to the filter. I am using a standard Delco PF25. Tonight I will get back under there and see what I can do, now that I have cooled off some.

I vote for trying a filter socket with an extension rod (NAPA), before you go to the trouble of re-plumbing the motor. I've gotten them into some really tight areas before.

I removed the header, alternator mufflers etc. and I removed the filter. PITA!!! I noticed something that contributed to the problem. The part that is attached to the motor that the filter atatched to was tweaked. What is that called and can it be replaced?

I believe it's called the "Oilfilter Adapter". You should be able to get one from GM or go out to a yard and get one off a trashed block. How much fab work did it take to get the 6 speed in the '65?? I'd like to do that conversion on day...

David,
Just curious why you wouldn't post your trans swap info here instead of e-mailing harlieghguy(sp?) directly. Others might be interested (I would be). This isn't the first time I've seen this. Was there some message from "Team Chevelle" about too much traffic or something like that, that I missed? Just curious.

This is the exact email. I just didn't think that many people were interested. I did the swap more than 2 years ago, anyone can ask away.

The swap took a lot of work. I used a tranny from a crashed F-body (94+ 6 speeds are best). The trickiest parts were adapting the hydraulic system for the clutch and a custom flywheel was needed. I have a 406 in my car and that normally uses a 168 tooth flywheel. The 6 speed requires a 153. The crossmember needed to be modified and moved and the driveshaft was shortened.
It was a lot of work, and money. But totally worth it for the novelty of the car. I love the way it drives. I have 4.10s in the rear and a .50 6th gear ratio; really nice on the highway for cruising and great at the strip also.

Dave

P.S. if you want more specifics let me know.

Do a very careful job of research before going to a remote filter. I read an article several months ago that stated a remote filter caused a fatal drop in oil pressure in some motors. It has to do with a bypass valve issue I beleive. I wish I could remember more about the problem and what motor(s) are involved.

David, I have a 65 Malibu convertible, and am in the process of fitting a 2000 5.3L (327)Vortec engine. I would love to top it off with a 6 speed. Could you please provide me with any specific information you have available, it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, SRW.

I agree, be careful with a relocation of the filter. I added an oil cooler and max pressure became 40 PSI. So I removed the cooler.

I would look into an oil filter adapter which will allow you to run the smaller diameter filter. I forget the part number(s), but look at the one that fits 94-96 Impala SS. And if you don't have room for the length, there is a short version of that filter out there. If you need part numbers, let me know and I'll dig out an old catalog.
