 The CE "engine" is a misnomer. The CE replacement "engine" was generally only supplied as a "fitted block." That is to say a block with pistons (fitted rings, pins, etc.) and crankshaft. The mechanic was supposed to use as many parts off the original engine as possible when installing the CE "fitted block." Any parts that couldn't be salvaged came from the parts room.

If this general scenario was followed on your car/engine, the original surviving parts would be a likely clue as to the original engine.

PS GM did not do "upgrades:" A broke 402 would be replaced with a 402, not a 454 (or for that matter an LS5 with an LS6).

so unless you know what the car came with, there really isn't a way to tell. since the main difference between the 325 and 350hp 396 was the cam, this could have been either? jim

350hp might have a forged crank. I know that when cast cranks were first used on big blocks in 1968, they were only used on 325hp engines. I don't know if that was still true in 71/72.

what got me to thinking was looking up the casting number, it comes up as a 240hp 402 for 1972.

402 went with cast-only for '71. 454s had forged cranks through '72, then only manual trans Corvettes got the forged cranks after '72. All tall-deck 366 & 427 truck engines came with forged cranks.

My source were various Petersens Complete Book of Engines from 1972 & 73.
