IF your ignition key will go into the door lock cylinder, then the door cylinder can be coded to the ign. key. If it WON'T go into the door cylinder, then you'll have to try to fin some door cylinders that match your key so you can get them recoded to match the Ign. key.

My doors and ignition take two different keys. Is it possible to change the door of ignition cylinders so the same key will operate both the ignition and the door locks. This is on a 66.
 The door lock cylinders are the "masters (they actually have the key code stamped on them)" and the Ignition Lock is the one that gets re-keyed. Any competent Locksmith Shop can do that for you.

My Vega wagon had one key that fit all the locks on the car. I understand that lock sets like that are able to be ordered for most older cars. You'll just have to ask around.

Thanks everyone. What I want to accomplish is to have the correct style keys for a 66.

I have the cars original trunk and glove box key, which is pearl shaped and actually has the code still on the knock out portion of the key.

My door are the 66 style locks and use the 66 style octagonal key. My ignition cylinder was replaced and it is a 67 style ignition ( I guess only 67 styles are sold and they use a 67 style key with is different than a 66 style key). So recoding the ignition will not give me a key that will work in both the 66 door lock and the 67 style ignition.

So I guess I have to find a 66 style ignition cylinder and have that coded to my door cylinders, so that the key will be the correct style and work in both the door and ignition. Looks like I will be removing one of my door locks today as the door panel is off at the present time.

As a side not the 66 door key also works in the center console lock. I though I read some time ago on this site that the 66 did not come with a lock for the center console. But the 66 style door key fits and works. Maybe they just changed the style of the 67 ignition key and not the locks that were available.

As I mentioned above, a pretty well respected guy, said that the center console on a 66 did not come with a lock. Take a look at this page out of a 69 parts book.

http://www.gmpartswiki.com/getpage?pageid=75509

I specificaly mentions 66 chevelle with center console as gm 4566764 and 67 chevelle with center console as gm 7645831. And gm 1380873 as 66 chevelle w/floor console.. Case Assy.

So would these have been dealer or gm aaccessories?

Well I found something that clears up the thought on weather the 66 chevelle console had a lock or did not have a lock.

This is a direct quote from my 1966 Chevelle Owner manual Third Edition February 1966. On Page 18, under Keys, Doors, and Locks: "The round-end key operates the locks for the glove box, seat divider compartment on Super Sport models, trunk, and on two seat station wagons, the optional luggage space lid lock".

This would seem to indicate the console had a lock at sometime in the 66 model year, unless that is a miss-print.
