Wild turkeys, I suppose. So that WKRP episode where they tossed the turkeys out of the chopper were probably thanksgiving turkeys (raised for food) that can't fly? That had to be one of the funniest things I've ever seen on broadcast TV...

That's the first thing that came to my mind, too.
I was thinking, maybe they can't fly, but I'm sure thay can glide...

"as god as my witness, i thought turkey's could fly".....i've seen them fly, but it wasn't real high or real far. when i was a kid, my first time big game fishing in the sea of cortez, and seeing the flying fish, really freaked me out, some of those things can fly close to a minute or so....

They can fly, not great distances. I've seen them fly a quarter mile or so. They do like to glide a good bit. Wild Turkeys have maybe the best eye sight of any wild animal I have seen. I understand they can see color as well unlike many animals that just see basic tones of black and white.
fly ............ Hell they can't even get it on !! with out some poor guy a suction tube & a syringe !! I saw it on American's dirtiest jobs.........Professional turkey Semen sucker !!!

Trust me. They can fly and they can "get it on"! Have seen both.
I've shot flying turkey's during the fall season here. They fly up into trees at night, every night. Part of their defense from night predators. They used to fly up into oak trees behind our place 3-4 at a time. Kinda neat to watch. Also got to see the mating ritual and the "act" itself. Just like with humans, the girls play hard to get for awhile, looking disinterested, before submitting. She actually lays down on the ground as her signal that the time is right. Only to mounted by up to a 20 -30+ # gobbler who weighs at least 50% more than she does! He literally walks on her back for a few minutes before consummating the deal, while making a point of clawing up her back feathers first. Has to hurt like hell, you would think!

Same here! That's exactly waht I thought of. What made it so funny was the fact that we never actually saw turkeys dropping out of the helicopter. All we heard was Les Nessman's description of what was taking place over the radio via a remote feed (as it's done in real life radio broadcasts).Me too! the first thing I thought of when I r4ead the title!

And then Mr. Carlson's (Gordon Jump) line........"As God as my witness, I thought turkeys could fly!"

They're on my patio all the time. It's chick season now, and there are a couple broods of a dozen or so each that come down to water in my dogs water dish.

My 11yr old son and I just witnessed several flying a couple weeks ago when we were spring turkey hunting. It is amazing watching a nearly 30 lb wild turkey take to the air. Not exactly graceful but still an amazing site to see.
