Wondering what you guys would choose if you wanted to beef up the power on a 327. Constants would be aftermarket cam, intake, 1.6 rocker arms, prob. 650 holley 4 bbl. I was thinking it would be better to stick w/ the camel humps just because of the cost. Would the money you put into the vortec setup pay off? It would consist of special 1.6 rockers or clearancing and intake..which is a few hundred bucks..would it be worth putting a few hundred in the camel humps instead? Please give me your thoughts and why...thanks.

AS a owner of old model 461 not to mention many others sets good heads
For the money vortechs rite out of the box flow better and work better in stock form.
The hopped up set of of the older ones
Not to mention the money and advanced technology .
They are plentiful with a pocket port They are outstanding

Depends on exactly what you are looking for. I have a couple of car toys. One is intended only to go as fast as possible, as cheap as possible, strip oriented. I would not bother with less than the Vortecs or some newer aluminum heads for that.

For the others, and my Chevelle, I would use what I had on hand. Since mine is a 66, the camel humps would fit in nicely. I don't really care how quick it is, I just want to drive and cruise in it.

That said, you will spend nearly as much to clean, machine, port and install new springs and such in old heads as you will on newer ones that will be hands down better performers. I did an direct comparison on this, and aluminum AFR's were within a few bucks of rebuilt, ported late model iron heads. So I got AFR's.

The answer is REAL simple.
If you want the MOST performance, Vortecs will be a better head, as mentioned, right out of the box.
If you want to retain a semblence of original appearance, then the early double hump heads CAN be made into good performing heads---------------------with additional $$$$$$$.
The 68-earlier small blocks DO NOT have accessory holes in the ends of the heads, but all 69-later heads, including aftermarket heads, have accessory holes in the ends of the heads.
The 461-462 (double hump) heads will be 40+yrs old and there is no way to know if they may develop a crack tomorrow after you have spent $500-1000 on them.
For my older cars, I prefer a set of moderately worked 461 or 462 heads. For everything else, I prefer aftermarket heads such as Dart Iron Eagles, like these.

I would go Vortecs and then buy the little tool that you need to cut the guide down so that you have enough lift.

You can buy a combination tool that also enlarges the spring pocket while it cuts the guide down from Crane IF you are $Bucks up?

I figure others sell these too so comparative shop around if you want.

Pin the studs w/ 1/8" x 1" long roll pins and you are done!
