Hoping a few of the more experienced guys here can steer me in the right direction. Im going to freshen up my 350 in my 71 and am looking at A summit cam SUM-K1106 (This is a very basic cheap budget build...otherwise Id go Voodoo). Heres the motor, 2 bolt 350, about 9-9.5 compression with 64cc 186 Fuelies with the bigger valves, Edelbrock performer intake, flowtech headers, Holly 670 Vac Sec. Im running a Saturday night special converter (About 2000 stall) and 3.23 Posi rear. Not looking for a serious race engine right now, just a rough idle Tire burner. Heres the cam specs of the one im looking at, would like to know if I can go bigger, smaller, or is this just fine?? Would like it to sound pretty nasty. (Love the rough choppy idle)

Sounds like a big dog to me. If you're wanting to burn the tires you'll need a better converter. A converter that stalls at 2000 rpm with a mild 350 will stall an overcammed 350 even lower.

234/234 @ .050" is too big for a 9-9.5CR, 3.23 gear with small stall, IMO.
Something about 8-10 degrees less (@ .050") I would think. And with those heads, a split duration cam would be a better choice.
A Voodoo 60102 would work well! ;)

what if I went to a 3000 stall converter? Whats the biggest cam I can go with?? What about the Comp 280?? Id like the one under that but im worried it wont sound very nasty...I'd like a rough Idle...am going to 3:90 gears eventually

I ran the summit .465/.465 224/224 114 in a 250hp gm crate motor and it ran pretty hard up to 5500. Thats with the 8.0:1-8.5:1 compression those things come with.It sound pretty good too. Had good vacume all that good stuff. I think it would be a perfect cam with 9.5:1 compression.
