So I purchased some black plates from the guy in Norcal who restores them and sells to a ton of classic car guys. He knows his stuff.

My plates are stamped 1963. I believe all black plates from 63-69 are stamped 63.

I get a letter from the DMV stating my plates did not contain stickers or tabs, therefore the DMV is considering them 1963 plates which do not belong on a 1969 Chevelle.

I do have a 1969 sticker that the guy gave me. Was I supposed to put this sticker on the plate?

I have W series. Which should be period correct for my car.

Yes,
the 69 tag must be affixed to the upper right hand corner when submitting the plates to the DMV. Make sure there are no tags underneath it.
Put it on there and start over at another DMV office.

Whoever you dealt with at the DMV wasn't apprised of the new law. They should never have even submitted the application without the 69 tag affixed.

fwiw, not all are stamped "63". Commercial plates, such as were used on trucks and El Caminos are not stamped "63".
Their letter/number configuration will be different than passenger car. example: E 83 254, whereas a 1969 passenger car could be YZR 628

Just for a point of reference...my 66 El Camino's originally issued black plates start with the letter V. It was sold new in May 66. Plates were issued sequentially so you should be probably be looking for W, X or > for a 69.

My 66 Chevelle purchased in late 65 was SUF, My 67 Chevelle that I bought from original owner was originally sold in Cal in Nov of 1966 is TPF, my mothers 1969 Pontiac is XXv and it was purchased in late Oct of 1968.

Good luck with the DMV, they can be a pain.

So as to not confuse anyone...The plate sequence I referred to was for commercial plates..one letter and 5 numbers ( i.e, Vnnnnn) Car plates had 3 letters and 3 numbers (ABCnnn). A 66 VW I bought new in late 65 had the plate RLAnnn.

I've done three YOM plates and luckily the DMV I go to doesn't require you to affix the cooresponding year sticker, you just have to have it with you when you apply. How do they expect you to fit three stickers (month, year, and year of plate) when there is only spots for two?

Dont mean to hijack but being as the OP is in Ca maybe it will help with info.

Went and looked at this guys plates today seem original match the pink.
There are stickers on the right side but nothing on the left. How the heck do you get down to the orig without screwing up?

Starts with a V, too. These worth buying they are fairly straight just need to be redone. If I had a photocopy of the reg showing the plate matches would taht help?

My brother has a 67 C-10 pickup, don't know build date but his plates start with U.

With that said, I have noticed that sometimes you will see a sequence out of order slightly. It all depends what DMV issued and how often they replenish their stock of plates.

I would imagine that a DMV that issues very few plates compared to another, you would find an older plate issued as to a DMV that goes through many more plates.

I took 8 stickers off of mine to get to the 1969. You just have to carefully pick with a razor blade. The DMV could never answer my question on how a 69 sticker be exposed on a plate after all these years. I would try one of the $10 fakes of off Ebay. Most DMV workers won't know the difference and I doubt if they run the #. When the DMV sent me my tags they also sent two small plates that are supposed to attached to the top of the plate for the month and new year tags. I think I lost them.

SUCCESS!!

Got my tags and registration last week. They sent 2 metal tabs, gotta figure out what I'm going to do with those. Thinking I'll put the 69 tag on and maybe leave it at that until I get pulled over :D

My 2 metal tabs found their way into the recycle bin within seconds. You will get pulled over with just the 69 sticker. I just had mind sandblasted off and then repainted. The 2011 sticker looks beautiful right where the 69 sticker used to be.

I'm finding now that the 69 tags are in the top LEFT.
Not sure where the DMV wants to see it when you go in with them. I'm guessing most DMV employees don't know or care.
But I'm pretty sure they were affixed to the top left back in 1969.
