The previous owner had the holes in the water pump and intake plugged and I'd like to put a bypass back on. I'm having trouble locating a hose that will fit. I have a couple of fittings I found at Napa and as you can see the gap calls for twisted S type of hose.

Anyone solve this on their Airgap?

I solved that problem with my BBC /Airgap Manifold the same way the previous owner of your car did, PLUGGED! :)

INterestingly, I found an outlet valve at my local speed shop (Vic Hubbard, in Hayward CA) that has a 45-degree downward angle on it, which made it much easier to fit the hose. So they do exist

I wound up cutting a brass nipple in half, then used a molded 90* bypass hose. It does work, although a 45 degree fitting off the manifold would be best. THe only 45 degree heatings I cam across though were for 5/8" hose, not 3/4". If anyone has the numbers for the 3/4" fitting I could use one also.

Hugh,
Bend a pc of coat hanger wire in the shape you need and go down to your local parts store and see if they will let you look through thier einventory of hoses. You should be able to find one with the correct bend to fit. Also, I am almost positive that the oem style, correct angle hose is still available through sources like Year One etc, maybe even from a local parts store.

I also have been down this road and have tried to look at every conceivable hose at more than one parts place without luck.

My bypass is plugged and heater still connected.

We need a hose part number, anyone checked with Edelbrock for a solution because this is a common one ?

I'm getting ready to get my first big block, so I don't know much about em. What is the function of the bypass? Does it hurt anything not having it hooked up? Does the heater still work (I live in Kansas-a heater is important). Thank you. Probably a dumb question.

Why do you want the bypass vs. just plugged? I don't think it will make any difference. I noticed absolutely no difference in operating temps from having a bypass hose vs. just plugging the holes.

I have the same problem  ! Right now I have a 90* hose that is barely on there, everytime my friend comes over to visit he says "that hose hasn't burst yet?". There is a company that just came out with 90* fittings but their $25 a piece. I figured with two 90* fittings I could hopefully loop the hose and it wouldn't look too stupid but you never know until its on there. I think the company's name is performance stainless steel?

Sit tight! I work at Carquest Auto Parts Distribution Center and I've come up with this piece several times. Give me a little time and I will go upstairs and go thru our inventory for a molded hose that will work. Gates Rubber Company used to mold this hose but not any longer. They just call for a length of 3/4 heater hose and that don't work good with the angle. I think the position is the same as the original manifold. I know mine (RPM non air-gap) is the same. I'll post back in an hour or two.

Didn't take as long as I thought. Iwent upstairs and found what you need. The Gates # or CarQuest is 19670. I'm sure any decent parts place can interchange that number. I plugged mine, but I'm sure this will work. Good luck.

69boo,
At this point I think I need any advantage in the cooling area given my location and running a SB radiator. An aluminum BB rad is somewhere down on my parts list:D.

Do the 45* fittings have a nipple as the straight ones do in the picture?

May not be the best but I just picked up my fittings at the local ACE hardware store. They are brass but work. They had straight, 45 aan 90 available

The picture looks like a short water pump?

I have a BB, long water pump and Edelbrock Air Gap and went around a bit on this. I found that just basic straight fittings were best. When I tried a 45 the fitting ends got too close together. I use a "standard" Chevy bypass hose that has been trimmed on one end. Seems to work and look right.

My figuring is that the bypass hose helps with engine warm up by allowing some coolant flow while the thermostat is closed. Otherwise you could get uneven warmup and hot spots before the thermostat opened up.
