I plan on buying a new set of ring and pinion gears either 3.73 or 4.10 for my 69 chevelle SS for normal use, not track use, is one mfg better than another?
I seen Richmond, strange, superior axle and gear and motive gear sell them, I'm not sure if there are more mfg .
What is a fair price to pay to have them installed with and without positraction
Thanks in advance

Richmond gears numerically higher than 390 (and I think including 390's) make whining noises even when they're installed correctly. It's because their gears in those ratios are cut differently, and they told me that themself over the telephone. A friend of mine a long time ago had a Chevelle with 4.11 ratio richmond gears, and the thing sounded like a truck from inside the car because of how loud the rear end whined. So if you're going with a ratio numerically higher than 370's, then I'd consider another brand of gears if I were you.

My Richmond's are 3:73. They don't whine.

There is a difference between a street gear and a drag gear. The drag gears are softer alloy that take shock better but won't wear as well and thus won't last in street driving. I don't know, but this could be where the whine comes from.

That could very well be true, but I was talking about "NUMERICALLY HIGHER" than 3.70's (as I've previously stated), so your 3.70 gears would NOT apply to my statement anyway. if there's any question, then he can just call Richmond's tech department to get it right from them just as I did.

For the best prices on quality brand name axle parts, e-mail these guys: Powe[email protected]

They don't sell all brands, but NO ONE seems to be able to beat their prices (even when including shipping) on the brands they do sell. They do sell Richmond and US Gear gears. I bought all my 12-bolt parts from them and the local shop who set up the rear end for me with these parts couldn't even beat their prices at their shop cost.

Also: 1-631-589-7020/1-866-589-GEAR 8:00-4:30 Eastern Monday-Friday

They are based in New York state somewhere if I recall correctly.
