Me and a co-worker were talking about this yesterday. I always wondered how this is done. Very carefully I would imagine. Anyone done this before or know how its done?

You build the ship with hinged masts, so they can be folded when you insert it into the bottle. The rest is done with long, narrow tools, steady hands and a lot of patience. :)

I have an old set of books my dad gave me. The popular mechanics do-it-yourself encyclopedias from 1955, it shows you how. PM me your address and I'll look it up, ohoto copy it and send it to you.

Thanks for the memory jog!
I had totally forgotten about this hobby.
My Mom's grandfather used to build all kinds and sizes of ships. Growing up, I used to think this was magical.
Takes more patience than I'll ever know...

They sell kits in the hobby shops. Plastic of course. The really cool ships are the handmade (ie, no kit) wooden ones.

My dad used to build model ships when he was a kid. He was in love with ships in general. My family actually has a ship-making heritage.

Anyways, he made lots of model tugboats and stuff, some of them he still has. He never did the bottle thing, though, which is a shame. I'd love a nice 10 or 12 incher for my office, I think it'd be a great ornament.

So when you get one of these kits. The bottle is completely empty and you just start feeding in the parts through the neck? Starting with the hull of the boat I would imagine? Actually, I havent even seen a complete finished one in years. Let alone a kit.
