I'm sure this post will get alot of attention. Wait until you guys hear the whole story! In the meantime let's start....

Can anybody make heads or tails of this build sheet? Its supposed to be to a 72 Chevelle SS but from what I can see there is no way to pin it to the car because the VIN number is missing from the sheet. The guy I got this car from says he found it on the floor near the gas peddle under the sound padding. I haven't looked yet to see if the rest of it is there. I also haven't looked under the gas tank that's my next project. In the meantime my main question as follows. Is this build sheet worthless as it stands? He also tells me that the car has a Z15 SS package because of the two speakers in the back. Is that true? The car has a (nice) 454 now and there is no W in the VIN. Car has a console with buckets and the original radio is gone. As for the other options they are all there and I have yet to inspect the rear to see what it has (not that I know what I'm looking for). Can anybody lead me to a picture of a car with the paint code 26? I've got more but this should be enough for now.

Regards

The sheet does show B22 SS door emblems and 15-inch tires/wheels which were included with the SS option. I think the fuel gauge number 819 is also the round fuel gauge in the dash panel which would indicate either a base SS round gauge pod dash or a (not too often found) U14 equipped non-SS. Having two speakers in the back is a new way to tell a 71/72 SS to me. :secret: The missing VIN portion is a big hinderance but check the trim tag. See if the number 0405 is after the body assembly date code on the third line.

Here's a link to a code 26 Mulsanne Blue 72 - http://www.chevellestuff.com/1972/chevelle/gallery/2626.jpg

ST 72-13637 R 04312 BDY

The R is in the VIN as well

"R" is an Arlinton,Texas built car and my 71 Malibu 400 built in Arlington had 3 of it's 4 build sheets under the tar paper on the floors and last one was on top of fuel tank. Good luck and I hope it is a real SS and if it's not just enjoy it it as it is if you're happy with the car...

Thanks Guys for all the help so far. The only thing that's bugging me is if this IS in fact the build sheet that goes to the car. The matching 405 code on the trim tag and build sheet along with the matching R code on the sheet, trim tag and VIN gives it alot of credibility. The car is in real nice shape but before I go and pour more money into this baby I want to be sure I don't have a clone. I don't want a clone! (No offense to you clone owners but I have been sweating one of these for over 25 years!!!) Also I don't want to pass it on someday as the "Real Deal" or a "Possible SS" if it's not. The guy who sold it to me swears it's real but I didn't get to see the build sheet until AFTER I paid for it so I was under the impression he was trying to pull a fast one on me. He said he had the build sheet but he didn't say it was incomplete. Me being the trusting sole that I am..... Oh well, so far everything is checking out.

Nice to know that there might be another build sheet or the rest of this one somewhere in the car. The guy told me that he did not check under the gas tank. I guess that's my next step because I think it's a real nice car. You guys think so too?

No that statement is not true. Z15 had nothing to the do with the radio or speaker options. Z15 is the SS option package and a radio was not included.

The car is definitely not a SS 454, L48 is a 350 4bbl engine

Thanks for that info.

Nice piece of literature!! I noticed the bottom of the page above the one with the info says "71 models". Does this all apply to the 72 model as well?

I knew it wasn't a true 454 car because it lacks the "W" in the VIN and I can see the engine code for the 350 on thebuild sheet. As for the Z15 package everything seems to be there except the remote mirror. I know the door panels were replaced, car was painted and the mirrors are new so that option could have been on the car. I have to check for the function symbols on the knobs. Do you know which knobs it refers to?

Same information from Chevrolet docs concerning 72 SS and Heavy Chevy

The headlamp, radio, and lighters had the symbols. All 72's had the symbols; that's why they're not listed in the 72 info above.

Don't sweat the remote mirror. I've seen a lot of legitimate '71 and '72 SS cars with the standard driver's mirror. Go figure.

I checked the knobs. I've got the lighter, the original radio has been replaced with the crapiest Pioneer I ever saw but it DOES fit in the dash nicely and the headlight knob is something I've never seen before.

Is there a list of places on where to look for build sheets? I'm going to drop the gas tank as soon as the fuel runs low. Shouldn't take long with this engine!
