I keep finding more and more springs that are broken as I pull off upholstery. I'm at 8 broken springs in one seat so far (5 in the back and 3 on the bottom). I think I may just take them to an upholstery shop or 2 and see how much they'll charge to replace them. Two of the broken one on the bottom are the ones on the front corners that go from the frame to the outer edges. They look like they are not standard springs.
Anyone know how hard those little clips are to pull off and on? (the ones that tie two springs together).
This is really starting to get depressing since I just bought all of the upholstery, plastic pieces, foam, chrome, etc and wanted to get these done before New Years.

Which springs are these?

Do they go on the top or bottom piece?

Since mice have invaded my car when it sat in the barn for over 15 years I took the buckets all the way down to the metal shells. The springs were rusted and broken so they went into the trash. I took the seat shells and seat brackets and had them sandblasted and then I painted them black. Next came top and bottom seat spring assemblies that I installed. Seats were taken to a local shop where he installed the seat foam and covers that I had purchased as part of my upolsterey kit.
This was not cheap I probably have $700. in the two buckets but they are now like brand new and great to sit on.

The ones in the picture are the ones that go from the frame to the seat springs. The seat ones are like a continous SSSSSSS - the others are continous but have a bend in the middle to hold the seat springs off of the frame.

Did you only take one seat apart or do you have both apart ? If the other one is still intact just look at it. Reassemble it just like the other one is.The clips are tough but not much harder than the hog rings.

Keep going !
I ran into all of the same problems. Once you solve it ones the rest are easy - you're just doing it over again.

Don't rush ! When you get tired you will get frustrated and you start making mistakes and it just goes downhill from there. Walk away for awhile. I did one seat cushion a night. Don't forget the bag trick ! :D

I think I've pretty much decided to go with all new springs.
Does anyone know for sure if the assembly from Year One is complete? (I don't want to reuse ANY of my rusty/broken springs.)
Here are some pics of the year one assemblies

For some reason, the top assembly looks completely wrong. Maybe it's just the angle.

I've read a few posts on here too about how year one generally charges 10-20% more than others, anyone know of a cheaper, good quality distributor for the complete spring set (assembled)?

You could try Car Shop Car Shop 739 N. Batavia, Orange Ca, 92868 800/235-2470 or Original Parts Group 17892 Gothard Street, Huntington Beach, California 92647 800-243-8355. I don't think Dick at True Connections has springs but you might give them a call.

They are both local you you can touch & feel what you're buying.

I've looked in the TC catalog. They're not listed. But, I've gotten a few things there that weren't listed though!
I'll give those others a call as well. Thanks!

I replaced my broken seat springs with ones from Ground Up and the upholstery shop said they worked great. It is really no more expensive to take the upholstery shop everything and have them do it all. Only problem is that when you put in new springs, foam and covers, it adds about 1/2inch to the height of the seats (at least until I break it in).
