I have contacted Moser about a bolt in housing for my Chevelle. They want to know what type of brakes I plan to use. What are the brakes being used by those of you who have installed the bolt in housing ? Did you take them from a donor ? Did you go with Ford bolt pattern axles or Chevrolet ? If you used Chevy bolt pattern axles & Ford brakes how did you address the brake drum issue ?

Thanks in advance for all responses.

This is a good question. There was a similar thread a while back and never did get an answer on the ford vs chev brake/bolt pattern issue.

Probably the main consideration is if you already have chev bolt pattern rims you want to use and if you are on the highway and want to be able to use your spare.

If you are only racing and have to buy rims anyway, then why not leave the ford axle brake setup alone. You are not ever going to use the rear rims on the front so bolt pattern is not an issue.

I already have chev bolt pattern rims so I would go with gm pattern axles. Then the problem is with the drums. Either find a chev pattern drum or drill new holes in the ford drum.

Another potential issue is with the screw in wheel studs. The large allen heads may contact the cross bar that is part of the parking brake assembly under the drum. I solved this by removing the parking brake assembly. Alternatively, the cross bar could be cut so the bolt heads will clear.

The 9 inch housing is available with the housing ends that accept the Chevy brakes that you have now. There is no reason to use Ford brakes on these 9 inch rear ends. That is why they asked you what brakes you want to use. They will build the housing for the Chevy brakes. All that you will have to do to use your current brakes is to have the hole in the center of the backing plates bored out to 3.150 inches so that they will fit over the Ford axle bearings. Any machine shop can do that in about 30 minutes. There is also no reason to use the Ford bolt pattern on the axles. The axles are going to be made to fit this housing and the bolt pattern will be drilled when the axles are made.

moser will put 12 bolt ends on your rear, and if you have the 10 or 12 bolt backing plates and brakes, all you have to do is have the backing plate bored out a little(they will give you the meas.) and you will have stock brakes-all your orig. stuff will bolt up, and it still eliminates the c-clips
if you dont have the old brakes, mp brakes offers a comp rear drum setup that offers a larger upgrade(11"), just bore out the b/p, and your in business
its about 1/2 the price of disc's, and less hassel
this is why they were asking what you wanted-i have done a bunch of these, and works great-moser is 1st class to deal with
sandy is right about the allen head studs hitting the xbar, can be solved using hex head studs, which are hard to find, im looking for some now, i found 5 in the garage, cant rember where i got them-good luck

Thanks So Much For The Help. I Hope To Accomplish This In The Next Couple Of Months. My Initial Thoughts Are To Use A Detroit Locker. The Car Is Mostly Street Driven But Will See The Track About A Half Dozen Times A Year. I Would Appreciate Your Opinions On The Locker. Thanks Again

I went with a Detroit True Trac and now wish I hadn't because I am now using a transbrake. Had I not gone to the transbrake it would have been ok, but according to Currie they can't take the shock from a brake. So....I'll be changing to a Detroit Locker now. A pricey mistake on my part. I do wish they would have told me that when I ordered my 9inch.

Go with the Detroit Locker in the 1st place.

When I had mine built, I took the brake backing plates off of my 12 bolt, and my local builder drilled them and put them on the Moser housing. Then I just swapped over the rest of the parts after the rear was in the car... so my Moser 9" has my Chevy drums on the back.

Steve65,

Why would you go with a locker rear with a tranny brake ?

Seems to me a brake is strictly racing and then you would go with a spool.
