Hello. I have recently purchased a 68 SS convertible. Before purchasing I checked all the numbers and codes and they all matched up verifying that it is a numbers matching. I noticed that on the Body by Fisher tag that there is no assembly plant code, but all the other codes are there and match. Is this a "one off" tag?

You almost have to be suspicious of that tag as it's only held on with a screw, when it should be held with 2 special rivets. Have you looked for the hidden VIN by the heater core?

Normally I would be too. I've been corresponding with the owner and at least the 10B body date falls in line, date-wise with the Kansas City build sequence number supplied. Also interesting to note the -A after the trim code - Kansas City was the only 68 plant to do that (except when Buick/Olds replacement interiors were used in April), but it's also lacking the dash character (-) after the -A; typical would be 754-A-.

Are hidden partial VINs located on the firewall behind the heater box on 68 Kansas City cars? I know some plants in 67 did have a partial VIN there (Atlanta) and some didn't, not sure about 68.

Not yet we first got the car apart last week. If the previous owner(s) were blasting the car wouldn't they have needed to pull the tag off therefore removing the special rivets? The other corner is missing so it can only be held on by one screw.

Here is one case I might spring for a reproduction tag, expensive as they are, and keeping the orignal with the car; assuming you could get a reproduction with the plant information missing.

Living in Oklahoma with their trim tag law it'd also have to be stamped "REPLACEMENT TAG" but it might just be worth it to preserve the original.

If you can, be sure to check the firewall for any stampings like 8K123456 where 123456 is your sequence number. If the body comes off the frame, look along the top of the frame rail on the driver side after the axle kickup for a stamping there as well and see that they match the VIN plate on the dash and/or registration.

Still a unique color scheme car...I think I'd like it. :D

Dale, have you seen any other chevelle tags with the plant code left off? I have seen a few fullsize ones like that.
I have also seen a 68 chevelle cowl tag where the interior code had -A-Z on the end.

No other Chevelle tags with no plant code I can remember. I have several 68 & 69 KAN tags with AZ or Z on them, namely 132xx and 134xx series cars.

I'm beginning to think these letters desginated body trim lines the cars would be directed to. My ex-69 Concours Sport Sedan had TW on the tag and I've never seen another tag with those markings.
