In the past I've had several people ask me how my exhaust was done on my car, and heres a picture, this is the best setup I've come across for a 470 inch big block with mufflers. I have the system out of the car making some updates for the data logger. The mufflers are 3 1/2 center in, center out top ten shoot out flowmasters, headers 2 inch Hooker super comps.

I have not done back to back extensive testing, all I would say is this is what I run and and have had good results with this setup, and others have as well.

Hi Mark,
What`s the length of the collector extension/headpipe before muffler? It seems that is very important in open exhaust, did that show up in your testing with mufflers? Also, did you ever use a x-pipe? Great info thanks

ps I`ll be in touch

Aren't the Flowmaster shootout mufflers a design without all the baffles and chambers? 40Coupe and VortecPro those have to be LOUD for the street. Bet they sound really amazing though.

Just to note on the weight, my 3" pipes and Hooker mufflers weighed 80 lbs.

No dynomax in test, no X pipe been tested, yet my 3" exhaust is junk because pro stock does not run an X pipe....HMMMMMMM. My Mallory ignition is junk, Mallory fuel pump is junk, ATI converter hasnt been freshened in while....its a wonder my car will even run....LMAO.

I havent seen any tests on the X-Pipes. Have you run it both ways, with and true duel? I am in need of a system very soon and there are a lot of guys running x-pipes. I wish I could see some data one way or the other. Im not sold on them yet. I certainly like the sound of true duels better.

Excellent question
Pictures are nice but the lengths from the end of the primary pipes to the tip of the outlets is a huge deal, one of the most important in the exhaust system assuming you are not running a muffler with enough volume to "fool" the primary collector into thinking the muffler is the tuning end.
So some numbers would be nice to go along with the 8x10 color glossies

I don't know enough about how an X pipe set-up works to know how it is effected by the lengths??

SS454- By all means, if you like the sound of open headers, go with the shootout exhaust. If you want the same horsepower but a street-friendly exhaust but with a weight penalty, go with the Dr. Gas X-pipe. The ONLY downside is weight. That is why stock eliminator and super stock don't run X-pipes, WEIGHT.

I really can't agree with that because every stocker and superstock that I'am aware of bolts weight in the car, in the case of my car it was over two hundred pounds bolted in. With further tuning you might see more than .003.

No problem Mike.

X-pipe system in 597' density altitude
1.284
3.73
5.85 @ 115.12

Straight-through in 1900' density altitude (-35 lbs off car)
1.280
3.75
5.88 @ 115.09

Wrong numbers :D
Total system/collector lengths are what I was referring to

My point was you shouldn't assume you can just arbitrarily stick a 3.5" system on without some idea of tuning & expect the same results gotten with the correct collector length or a multiple thereof,,,,,

Deleted.....testing can't be trusted.
I didn't mean you or your testing at all, I understand & appreciate you sharing results

What I am saying is people reading the thread need to know that the lengths, especially total collector length which can be a couple of things like I stated above is an important part of the exhaust system

Bob, it's because we are clueless and run incorrect fuel and exhaust systems for our applications and our testing is faulty.

I am more apt to believe real life testing done on the track than I am willing to believe what I've seen on dynos or a certain dyno. Ed Bigleys famous words "we don't race dynos" Its funny how my car used to be one of the best working small tire cars around,,,,now its just a piece of dog doo doo, kinda makes ya wonder about the integrity of the guy making those claims.

Wow, Not sure whats going on with a couple of you guys talking negative about yourselves.
I am interested in the real world testing of the x-pipe. Dyno testing or track testing.

FWIW I have read from some of the top engine gurus that the crossover and X-pipes do not help max effort builds. They did however say they have seen increases in power on the lower powered street car type builds.
