I have an complete 1971 402ci high performance (3969854) BBC with 1966 heads (3872702). Everything was rebuilt a while ago but only 1000 miles were put on it before being pulled and stored. Would I get more money selling the heads and long block separate or the complete engine?

Chris, unless the suffix code on the block suggests a specific application ie: CLB for chevelle, Elky or other desirable car resto piece I think you would be better off selling as a complete long block. It doesn't help that it has hours on it. So that you are aware what you have is not a complete 1971 402, its a 1971 402 shortblock. Internal components will matter ie: cast or steel crank, forged pistons/ rods etc. Is this a truck block? I wouldn't expect more than 800-1000. The small big blocks just don't bring the interest that the bigger stroker motors do. In some cases your talking the same money to build for 100 less cubic inches. Would help to know more about internals in you engine.

More info: It is a 71 hi performance passenger block for a chevelle, Nova or Camaro according to the numbers. It has a 6223 steel crank and it is a 2-bolt main block. The block was produced on April 26th 1971 and is .060 over. The heads were produced on Jan. 4&5, 1966. Thanks

Chris, it seems to me the heads are worth twice what the block is. Maybe part it? I have had not much luck with my twin CTB 402 Monte motors, but I finally did sell one. For
$2k installed. That was a RPM intake, big solid FT cam, worked 820 heads, and I threw in a set of $125 headers I had to buy.

Tough sell. Craiglist it (yeah, new verb), have a valve cover and the oil pan off. Price it at $1500 and hope for the best.

If you can get the other side of $800 for this motor as advertised, not running, no receipts, and no guarantee, take the money and buy a lottery ticket. Nothing about it offers more than a 454 under the same conditions that can be had for less.

I've sold many a motor, for good money, but, always, that the customer could hear it run. get a cheap engine stand, frame out a rad suppport, put a radiator on it, oil pressure gauge, and water temp, and battery, and headers, and fire it up, makes a world of difference. ask 2500, if it everything checks out and it sounds good.

Got more details? Any performance upgrades done during the rebuild? Compression ratio? Forged assembly? What cam and it's specs? Valve sizes?

All these things would be needed to know in order to maximize your sale price.

I'm still doing my research but the pistons have "L3086F" stamped on them. I think they are TRW? The cam has Fireball II 302H stamped on it. I'm trying to get specs for it. The oil pump is a Melling "M77HV". The Intake is a Weiand 8001 dual plenum. I traded my riding lawnmower that was worth $1600 for this and thought I could make a few hundred more on it. Do you think I can get $2000 for it?
