Hey Guys,

I'd like to get a remote starter/keyless entry for a friend of mine. She has a Ford Windstar minivan. I'd also like it to have a panic button, just in case. I looked into the Bulldog Security stuff, which looks good, but unfortunately, they don't have one with a panic button.

Any suggestions/input appreciated.

Thanks,

Before looking too serious at the Bulldog stuff, look at their web site to see thier wiring diagram and match it up with the vehicle. My wife bought me one of their remote starter kit for my 97 GMC, but the wiring diagram on their web site was completely wrong. After about a week of trying to figure it out I gave up and just took it back. Took the truck to Circuit City and had them install what ever it is they sell.

I installed a designtech in the wife's Tahoe, didn't come with keyless entry, but they are available. Works flawlessly so far. There website diagrams were on the money and it has a panic button.

I just had a Nordic Star unit installed 8 days ago , on the 96 Ford Taurus Station wagon I bought 9 days ago! The unit I bought was $250 Canadian installed. Mine does not have the panic feature but I think they had one there for around $300 that did. It will start the car from my living room and that is through 2 walls.
So go ahead and give it to me for buying a Ford if you like friends! I can take it! :D It was a toss up between the Taurus and a 96 Monte Carlo. The Monte was a beautifull car. Black on black leather. But when I called a GM mehanic friend of mine, He asked me which engine it had. When I told him it had the dual overhead cam V6, he said, " Close the hood and do not look back"
Anyway Big, (name?) I bought mine from Future Shop. It is just over a week old and so far so good!

i still can't understand whay so many people need remote starters? it gets cold here- but to start a car and let it run for 15 mintues is just wasteful. and add to that the fact that you don't even go outside to start the thing, and you start to see why we people in the western hemisphere have ever expanding wastelines.

I've installed several from DesignTech. Very good product and support.

Oh, and by the way... I use mine all year round. I rarely have it running for 15 minutes though. I usually hit the button right before going out the door or while I'm walking up to it (like if I'm in a parking lot). I like to think its better for the motor to be running a minute before I jump in and go. FWIW!

It's for a single Mom with three kids, and I think the little bit of gas burning is worth the lowered chance of the kids getting sick.

kids need to get sick once in awhile- it builds the immune system. but getting cold don't cause sickeness ,stuff in the air does. i get sicker in summer than i ever do in the winter.
i know i sound like of an old fart when i say this- hey, i'll be 30 in 8 months- but we never had stuff like remote starters growing up and Dad and Mom never let the cars run longer than it took to scrape the snow off the windows- and guess what- we all lived. in fact, being the oldest, i was the one that got to go out at the ripe old age of 8 and scrape the ice and what not off the car when it was -20 degrees. crazy, huh? my prents should have been locked up for child abuse, making me not only WORK, but do it in subzero temps, as well. then we got piled into a car that was still -20 inside until the heater started kicking, which wasn't very long in that 73 Monster Carlo. guess what- we are still alive.

As a side note...I heard on the radio this morning that Carteret, NJ passed a law prohibiting the idling of an empty vehicle. This includes IN YOUR DRIVEWAY! So much for remote starters, huh? An officer can write out a summons for this terrible offense.

Hey Brain-surgeon Mike,

Any adverse stressor, including cold air, makes you more succeptible to the virus, or bacteria.

Or do you think that exactly the same percetage of people are sick in the summer vs. winter.

Think before you write.....

While it's true that your immune system can be affected by stress, etc, there was a medical study done in England a number of years ago which PROVED that being exposed to the cold does NOT increase one's chances of catching a "cold". This was a subject of a Nova program about ten years ago. The reason why people are more prone to the cold virus in the winter is because of close proximity to each other and the drying of the mucus membranes in the nose due to the heat used in most homes, allowing more of the cold causing virus to enter the system. It's a proven medical FACT. Do some research. Also, the virus can enter your system very easily through the very act of rubbing your eyes after touching an object which still has the virus agent on it. Washing your hands frequently can reduce the chances of "catching a cold". A good site with some great information is:

So, the bottom line, from your own writing is still; more people catch colds in the winter, period. But I wasn't just talking about a cold, I said getting SICK.

You'd probably have a better understanding of this, if you were the one staying home from work, without pay, with three sick kids.

Geez, what an atttitude. Calm down! By getting sick, what do you mean? Colds? Flu? Chicken Pox? Measles? I HAVE been home with a wife and a kid sick and have come down with the same cold, only to have it passed back to them again. Believe me, your not the first one to have experienced sickness at home. After 32 years of marriage and family, I've got a little experience also, as most people with kids have. But YES, the COLD virus, IS more prevalant in the winter when everyone is CLOSED IN. It's a medical FACT. Even at work, more people are sick during the winter months. Seriously, though, cut back on your caffiene. ;)
Besides, how did this discussion get SO far off topic?

I have installed Bulldog Security products and the Valet brand of starters and they both work fine but I found the bulldogs to have better instructions and be easier to install. In my cases bulldog had the schematics I needed, however I would always make sure I have a shop manual handy for any wiring job( I use alldata)
As far as needing a remote starter, you don't, but
I live in MN also and I work 3rd shift outside most of the night, I'm an aircraft mech and work the line
After being outside most of the night when its cold, its very nice to be able to get in a warm car when its time to go home. I take my work truck
and drive down by the hangers where the parking lot is about 10 min. before I punch out and light it off every morning. Also nice to hit the remote while getting ready for work at night and being able to walk out and get in the car and go with no scraping/warm up. I don't care how much extra gas it uses, I would never be without one!
:D
