want to upgrade to a mini-starter for my 64SS with a 327, AT and Pertronix ignitor in the distributor. Which one would you recommend? Was thinking Powermaster, but not sure which one will fit without issues. My 64 has factory wiring, so I assume I only need the positive battery cable & purple wire and I should tape the other wire to the harness? I see a Powermaster XS 9526 at Summit, seems like a good one. Thoughts on that one?

Do a quick search for a PMGR starter you will find some good reviews of starters that were designed as OE on Chevy 454's,4.3L V6's, and a bunch of 305 5.0L truck motors.GM copied the other auto makers and came out with their own late model starter and they are pretty good starters.
PMGR stands for Permanent Magnet Gear Reduction starter. Here is an aftermarket copy of one of these starters. What I feel is the best thing about these type starters is if you look at this starter you'll notice there is no big chunk of aluminum adapting it to your Chevy it just fits as it's designed to fit, a Chevy V8.

That one is for an angled bolt starter and I believe yours would be a straight across bolt starter.I have a link for that one and I'll post it when I find it.

Here's one of the links I held onto for an aftermarket straight across bolt PMGR starter

If you search you can find them at Rock auto and on ebay.

And here is a post about a member who was looking for advice and who bought a new PMGR starter

Also read what El Bambino posts in post #32 in that thread.

the one that it looks like El Bambino is recommending doesn't use all the original wires from what I can tell

Here's one for a 153 tooth flywheel that has four posts that will work with points ign or HEI.

Got a 168 tooth flywheel? Here are a couple that might fill the bill, but don't know if they have the four post solenoid. What is Wally Worlds return policy on starters?

I always get things like this Locally (NAPA, etc) so if it fails, I can just go get a replacement

Have the factory starter rebuilt, they can be set up to turn a tremendous amount of torque at a fast speed. This gets the pumps working faster during start up.

My factory starter has been working for 43 years now..

I would definitely install a new set of Accel points with condenser..
There are two set of points listed. One is for higher revving. You want the lower revving set if your not racing, because this also acts as a rev limiter..

If revving to 6000 use the 32 ounce points.. https://www.summitracing.com/parts/acc-8104acc/make/chevrolet

If staying under 4500 rpm use the 23 ounce points.. https://www.summitracing.com/parts/acc-8101acc/make/chevrolet

If you have the small 153 tooth flywheel, you want an AC/Delco starter for a 96 Impala SS with 5.7L engine. If you have the larger 168 tooth flywheel you want an AC/Delco starter for a 96 Chevy Tahoe with 5.7L engine.

These are the only starters I will use anymore - great starters, and if you look around the prices aren't too bad. For whatever reason the small flywheel starter runs a little more $$$ than the large flywheel starter.

You're right,if you have an old factory Delco-Remy starter but the OP asked about mini starters.
That Delco Remy starter of the 60's-70's was a great design plus it was used on all the different GM divisions with little variations so they fit different engines and models. So why would they replace such a successful design ?
The PMGR starter that they replaced it with was just as strong yet much lighter and because of the Gear Reduction the Permanent Magnet electric motor worked easier. The PMGR starters that are OE on GM late models starting around 1992 or so are great little mini starters.Much better than the mini starters that need a big block of aluminum to be adapted a Chevy V8.A GM mini starter just bolts right up,is lighter and takes up less room.
Nothing wrong with an old OE Delco Remy starter if you have one but the new PMGR design takes that old DelcoRemy to the next level. JMHO
