Check with your service provider. They may offer a good free one. Time Warner gives all users free Computer Associates Anti-virus, firewall, spyware removal and spam blocking software.

It is best to use more than one because no single product will catch it all. As I said before Spybot S&D and Ad-Aware together will eliminate 95% of the spyware that is out there. For anything that might be left after running those you will have to figure out what spyware bug you have and do search for how to remove it. I would also run those in safe mode after downloading the newest updates if you are having problems.

I run the Spybot S&D and Ad-aware SE, along with McAfee AV. One thing to remember is, they all do different things, so they're all actually needed. Spybot takes care of spyware programs, Ad-aware works on pop-up programs, and the AV software watches out for viruses. Pretty much trouble-free, but once in a while, something might slip through here and there. My son tends to visit a lot of different sites, so I need to keep on top of it, and talk to him if I notice anything funny going on, due to something he downloaded.
