While I have heard of manual four speed, bench seat cars (there is one in my garage), I have not heard of a notched bench. GM changed the shape of the stick to accommodate a four speed/bench combo. The stick is curved at the bottom, instead of at the top, as with bucket seat cars. The Ground Up catalog has a good picture of what the Muncie bench seat stick looks like.
I remember back in the old days guys with 55-57 Chevys had to notch the seat when they put a 4 speed in the car, since the tall seat was so far forward in relation to the trans. Then I think Hurst started making a weird shaped handle that would clear the seat on those cars. Never heard of a Chevelle with a notched bench seat from the factory.
