Been gone a while, but ready to get back in the Chevelle game, pics of my distraction

The past couple years have been very hectic. I've had little to no free time between work, business travel and life in general. I don't post nearly as much as I used to. Recently, I mostly just lurk in the Performance forum.

The 65 Malibu's been down for a few years, and is currently sitting at a friend's house. I completed the 496 swap, rebuilt the front end, added a NAPA quick ratio PS box, new shocks, springs, etc. I walked away from the car a while back, and ended up selling my house and moving. The realtor told me to lose the car and he'd get me an extra $10K. So, my friend agreed to take it and finish up some odds and ends, including the rear disc and welding some patches in the floor. The cars nearly (mechanically) done, and should be on the street within the next couple of weeks.

Got this last distraction out of the way, and it looks like I'm finally gonna have some time for the cars.

The players

My son Reb, my best man and old Marine Corps buddy, Sherwin, and I
Sherwin was good enough to fill in for my brother who is currently in Afghanistan. Reb served as ring bearer and filled in for an usher who got cold feet.

My wife Mei Mei

The families

Gene Callahan, philosopher, Chevelle storage lot operator, and all around nice guy

Bob, family friend and motorhead

Greg Jacobson and his wife Maria. He's a master head porter (got 232CFM out of my 59's 283 heads!!!). He's every bit as slow as he is meticulous.

Well, that's nice - but does Mei Mei dig cars? I'm not sure what to say about a marriage that starts by running out of gas, instead of that schtick you should have done a big smokey burnout in the Corvette and then some NASCAR style doughnuts in the parking lot - that would give everyone a reason to wave their cowboy hats!

Really, best wishes for all.

Dean, I hope you're wrong about the free time. I don't think I've ever been busier than I was the past few months. BTW, I might be headin back to KC for a visit next year. If so, I'll give you a heads-up and see if we can't get together again.

Thomas, she loves old cars. However, that does not include racing and breaking them. The 62 has an auto, and I think she considers it her cruiser. We have an understanding such that she goes to the cruise nights, shows, etc. and in return I'll take her line dancing or to some punk rock bar in Hollywood. BTW, the cowboy hats were her idea. The subject of old cars was my "in" when I met her, and I took her to Bobs Big Boy in Toluca Lake (Burbank) for our first date. We're postponing our honeymoon to Nashville until spring, but did take a ride to Bob's to celebrate.

She told me that ever since she was a little girl (watching old American movies), she wanted to ride away from her wedding in an old American car. Well, it almost didn't happen. I was thrashing on it in the drive (no room in the new Burbank garage), in the rain, on Dec. 2, and all of the following day, trying to get it ready for the wedding on the 4th. It's just a stock 305 and TH350 and should be a great driver, but I swear that 62 has more gremlins and assorted maladies than any other two cars I've owned combined.

The first night I brought it home, it wouldn't re-start so I could take her for a ride. All kinds of IG and charging gremlins had to be repaired so it could be driven. The distributor was worn and had to be replaced (thanks Dave Ray for the awesome rebuild), the diodes were bad in the alternator, and it's had 3 starters on it ( 2 rebuilds from Kragen, but currently using one from a 1975 truck I had back in 91), and we've ran out of gas on more than a couple occasions, and it's frequent break-downs are keeping me somewhat in shape as I push it down the road. I'd sell it and find another, but she'd kill me. On a brighter note, the 327 block is in the garage, and it has splayed 4 bolt main caps and an offset ground 3.875" stroke crank waiting to go in it...

Wes,

Congrats, man! Looks like you had fun and I wish you well for everything in the future.

I hope my old-car driveaway goes better at my own wedding next month. I got the fiance to agree to let me drive her off in the El Camino AND to let me do a nice smokey 2nd gear burnout on the way out. Hopefully it'll make for a good memory (and tire tracks!!). Thanks again for the exhaust! One of these days I'll be driving the Elky through LA, so I'll have to swing by so you can hear it.

Congrats again!

And she seems to understand your obvious "passion" with old cars...

When I got married, my wife suggested we drive away in my Chevelle... I honestly let her bring up the idea...

I drove the car gingerly for the month preceeding the wedding, because I have a tendancy to break things at inopportune time...

We walked out of the church, and when I started the car (with 75+ people standing around) something broke... A quick check didn't find anything wrong, so I drove home (with a slight misfire)... By the time I got home (5+ miles), the car was starting to overheat, and I later found water in the oil and a cracked cylinder... Never found out why...

Re: Been gone a while, but ready to get back in the Chevelle game, pics of my distraction

ejrempel, thanks for the kind words.

TH, thank you. Ever do anything with that 500 of yours? Mine's been on an engine stand for the past 4 years.

Thanks Ryan. I still haven't installed the 3.00" pypes exhaust. I just put the mufflers over the collectors. The things been running almost a year, so I don't have any excuses. I'm in Burbank now, but not far from the 101 if you'll be passing through to the same area. Just give me a heads-up when.

I don't think you can go wrong using your El Camino. It really does add a special touch. Be sure to follow 1966 L78's advice about taking it easy leading up to the big day. Also, make sure your photog is ready before you light 'em up, because you might not get a second chance for the drive-off pics. I wish we'd have put the top down. Before we left, could have gotten some nicer pics.

1966_L78, I don't think we would have ever lasted without her support for my hobby. My cars seem to have the greatest number of mechanical difficulties whenever there is an audience. A friend went to bring the car around the church for us when we were leaving, but couldn't get it started. I would have been disappointed with anything less from the 62. He was eventually able to and we drove off.
