I would have thought the plug would be the same for both cars.

About all you can do is start tracing the circuits in the column. Find which one is drawing current and take it from there.

When I switched columns on my 73 all I had to do was rotate the factory plug 180 degree's and it plugged right back in. The non-tilt column rod when the ignition was turned on would move towards the firewall and with the tilt column it would pull back away from the firewall (or visaversa/it's been done many years ago).
It sounds like an ignition circuit is powered up while the key is off.
If all else fails do a continuity check between the old column plug terminals and on the new one to see where the wires should go.
