I just completed a 4 speed conversion project and am now having problems with my starting system. The engine would turn over very slow, took battery to be tested, they charged it and load tested it. It worked fine for a few days then started turning over slow again, after driving for a few blocks I could smell something, it was battery acid leaking out of the top vent caps, I rushed car home and removed battery and hosed everything down, the altenator appeared very hot also. Can anyone help me, I want to drive this car with the new 4speed but can't!! I did put in a new selenoid over the winter. Battery is about 5 seasons old. Any help is appreciated.

Check your charging system. Suspect that the alternator output has gone above 16 volts and is overcharging the battery. Guessing a bad regulator.
