Going to replace the balljoints in my upper front control arms. I have a new pair without the hardware can I use regular grade 5 bolts or do I need grade 8 hardware.
Anytime there is an option, go for the better bolt. Just keep in mind that grade 5 can't even hold a harmonic balancer on. Do you want that same thing holding on to a wheel supporting 4000lbs? Grade 8 is your friend
the bolts on the balljoint don't hold the wheel on- they merely hold the balljoint against the control arm. the weight of the car is held by the lower balljoint, and the upper balljoint is located laterally by a tight fit in the hole in the upper arm.
i wonder what is the tensile strength of the stock rivets that GM put in the arms 40 years ago?
that being said, i'd still use grade 8, just because.
