Don't need the balancer or flywheel for a 396. They are internally balanced engines so you don't want them on the crank when it is balanced. However you might want to have the balance of these items checked to see how close they are to neutral balance especially if used factory stuff.

So if you balance the crank with the flywheel and clutch installed and you go to replace the clutch how out of balance is your crankshaft? Balance the crank, than balance the flywheel/clutch to neutral balance so you can replace parts.

I agree completely on neutral balance assemblies. Unfortunately on external balance you have to install the flywheel and damper when you balance the crankshaft. Then all you can do if you need to replace the flywheel or damper is to match the replacement to the ones that were on the engine. I never touch the flywheel or dampers on an external balance assembly

Personally I have tried every possible method and simply have not been able to balance a pressure plate. There is movement in the assembly and there is no way to get it perfectly centered Centerforce is the worse with their weights on the fingers that can move all over the place.
