No it wasnt me that got fired but my wifes best friend. She worked all day today at a job she has had for 7 years now as a dental assistant. With out so much as a warning or anything she was called into her bosses office at the end of the day and she was told not by him but by the person who owns the company, over a speaker phone from 750 miles away that she was fired. Her coward boss didnt even say anything, (she thinks he is the one who wanted it cause business had been slow and she was the highest paid person there and had the most senority). I feel horrible for her as she is a single girl with a rent payment and other bills, as well as just going out spending money on all the christmas presents for her family and friends. She has had a job ever since she was a junior in High school and sometimes even two jobs just to make sure all the bills were paid and she was doing ok. The girl has a heart the size of Texas and it just really sucks to see decent people treated this way. She recently had been looking into purchasing her own home and to get away from paying rent. Just last night she called me and had car troubles about 10 miles away and I had to go get her. She has a 97 Camaro and ends up the fuel pump is out of it, (Can you say $800 bill for a new fuel pump by a local mechanic). Now she doesnt know what to do with that either since the car is paid for yet it has 130,000 miles on it so it really isnt worth alot.
I am not asking for anything just keep her in your mind as she is pretty upset about all of this happening 3 days before christmas.

Sorry for the long post, just upset about it.

That's about the most rotten thing I've heard lately. He could have at least waited until after the Holidays and given her some notice.
Sounds like she is better off not working for the scumbag anyway if he's low enough to pull a stunt like that.
I'm sure she'll get right back on her feet with a better job.
She has 7 years experience. That is worth a lot IMHO.

Too bad y'all are so far away, I could do the pump for a lot less than that amount. Friggin thieves!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Yea, before its all done i may end up doing it for just her buying the pump and me donating my time. I dont have a lift or a heated garage but i can save her a ton on it.

Thanks for all the kinds words guys, and gals,

One of the more interesting things about bosses, spouses, and lovers is that sometimes even after we think we know them after X number of years - they go do something that proves they were not the kind of person we had come to believe they were. Normally I can fully accept it when someone has told me that the relationship is over - unless they do it chicken heart style like happened to your wife's friend. In that case I think it is entirely appropriate to fully unload on the individuals. I cannot speak for the laws in your state, but I think that unless she had signed an at will employment agreement that her ex employer could be given legal grief. I would definitely find some way to cause them trouble.

I hate to hear stories like that anytime, but around the holidays makes it even worse. Sounds like she is a truly great person and I have faith that things will work out for her. You and your wife are truly great friends to her and that will outweigh any bad things that happen. I wish her the best.

Maybe Santa will let the reindeer fill her boss' stocking this year. ;)
That's awesome kboorman!

Well, that just sucks to hear Andy. Sounds like her boss was coward. Didn't even have the balls to tell her directly. And the nerve to just sit there after the conference call and say nothing. The boss and owners loss. Your wife's friend will find something better. She'll be alright. Sounds like a real nice lady.

Tell her, those at the coolest website on the web are pullin' for her.

I can relate to that. I got fired two days before Christmas once. I was installing water purification systems and the service manager allways told me "if you get done early, don't come back to the shop". I used to finish all my work orders and go home for a while then go back to work at the end of the day. Well my "A"hole ex-brotherinlaw worked there also and he told the GM. Well when the service manager was called in the office he denied ever saying not to come back to the shop. So , yeah that really sucks!!!

Bad timing to say the least! I remember when I got fired on my birthday 2 weeks before Christmas several years back...

My wife is an RDA too and fortunately, that type of job is in pretty high demand around here. I'm thinking if your friend is that experienced and a good person, it shouldn't take long to find a new position.

Tell her to iimmediately write a letter demanding full explanation as well as a copy of her employee file. If this is part of a larger group she is entitled to continued benefits under Cobra. She should demand severance (tell her to demand 7 weeks - 1 wk / year), she is entitled to file for unemployment and work part time while collecting. Additionally, she may have to do some soul searching if there was another underlying reason for her dismissal and address it - I won't say anymore, but I'm sure you know what I mean. But if she was truly fired for no reason other than gross misconduct, she has entitlement. Can't be unprofessional about it, but can't let yourself be pushed around either.

Good luck.

Sorry to hear of your friend's hassles b/c of the time of year and for that matter whenever stuff like this happens.

And a word to the wise.

DON'T ever skip time w/o having it known by OTHERS that will back you up or documented that you can b/c it can back up on you in a new york minute if the Boss decides to turn into a pr--k!!

Same deal on expense accounts, DON'T fudge them at all!

I had a Boss that used to call me out at the Shed at 8:05, 11:55 and 4:55 just to see if I was there when I usually always showed up at 7:45, worked through noon hour and left at 5:15!! PLUS, didn't even take breaks!!

I couldn't even get the pr--k on a job with me so I had to do them by myself!!

Much less how he used a magnifying glass on my expense account back then..

My last Boss over at the Firebrick Co. used to ask me if there was anything he needed to know about my expense acoount and I would verbally go through it fine, plus at times, he would flat run me off to home for several days if we had worked a weekend or two straight through on a job together!!! Great guy and the one I made peace with after they helped me out the door back in '95!!

Bad time of year to have happen.Best to have left the place anyway, sounds to be a sinking ship place anyway.I wouldn't ever go to a francise dental place. They just use up all your insurance coverage and get half the work you need.A good independent shop is the place to work.Good place to be able to advance in.Hope the best of luck to her.I like the one i go to,cute and well trained young ladies there. The one that cleans mine is a caracter, does real good job and always real therel.

Funny, a Canadian guy giving advise about Cobra (I mean me, not GRN69CHV).

We had some guys at work (I work in the US) get laid off. Here's what I understand about Cobra. No doubt someone will correct me.

Cobra entitles the person to purchase medical insurance at the same rate the company did (thus you get the group rate). It doesn't cost you anything until you make a claim. Once you make a claim you owe the company all the premiums going back to your date of termination, can get QUITE expensive.

Just have her look into it, is all.

In Canada its MUCH harder to un-employ someone. Even terminating with cause is difficult. Terminating your friend, assuming its without cause, with no notice, and no severance, is impossible far as I know. (unless the company files Ch 11 the next day, don't ask how I know that loophole  )

That just flat out sucks.... Like others have already said, there is a high demand in the dental field (my wife is a Hyginest) she should have little trouble finding a new job.. Some dentists are just scum bags..

Also, way to go on doing the fuel pump for her.. Maybe there's a TC member close by that could lend you a heated garage or shop?? Heck, if you were in my neck of the woods, you'd be welcome to use mine..

Merry Christmas,
Scott

1. sorry to hear of her bad luck.
2. i'm not familiar with late camaro's, why so much for the fuel pump? is it in the tank?
3. if you are getting the truth, and she wasn't written up over the years, then the company doesn't have documentation to back the release. i'd lawyer up. she may not get her job back, but maybe some $ to carry her to the next job.
4. sounds to me, if you dug deeper, there is something going on. maybe the boss made a pass or two, thus the firing by phone, versus, the actual boss. i would have her document any "hostile" incidents, and appoach the company. there is something else going on here. if she did her job, a company would rather keep her, than inexpierenced workers.
5. god luck to her, and nice of you to help out. i hope everything works out for the best....

I'm not Canadian - live in Pennsylvania. Have ran a distribution business for 25 years. In the very few instances when we had employee issues, even in the worse case we have done as I listed. In 25 years we have never had a lay-off. I have only had to "fire" 2 people in 25 years. Circumstances are unimportant, but in each case we provided severance.
