I've heard the whistles don't work but what the heck they can't hurt anything either, maybe at least worth a try

Sorry to hear about your meeting up with the deer

I knew a guy that swerved to miss a deer and hit the ditch. He really got the run-around with the insurance then. They tried to say he fell asleep (late at night). He decided from then on he wasn't swerving anymore.

Those whistles don't work, local sheriff tried them on patrol cars some years back and everyone that had one hit a deer eventually.

They have so much problem with deer around this part of the state, its unbelievable. They are in towns, people's yards and causing a great deal of crop damage on farms. Even have problems at the airports, yet when the tried to hunt them off, all the animal rights advocates came out to protest. Rather see a plane load of passengers crash into a deer at take off or landing then let them be hunted. State won't let them be tranplanted because of TB spreading. They finally hired pro's to come in and kill them off, donating the meat to the neady. You would have thought it was poeple they were hunting.

I have wacked 4 deer since 1989, 3 with trucks and one I hit in the nose with the mirror on a Pontiac 6000. Probably 50 nears miss's so far. Each one I never saw untill a second before impact. Tne worst was when I was on cruise control at 60mph on a 5 lane in near town, all of a sudden a big buck crossed my path. Over $4000 in damage to a 1992 Ext cab 4x4. I heard later that it was 16 pointer but I was so pi$$ed I never went and looked at the time.

I know the deer whistles don't work for deer but they DO attract bats...

I know this because I had them on my truck that hit 2 deer and 17 bats...
Bats make big splats on the grill and windshield... And that's only if you're lucky that they don't come through the windshield...

I do the deer boogie every morning lately. Lots of deer on the back roads and they are moving. The deer population is not getting any smaller in this area. It seems the hunting season last forever between bow, gun and black powder. But alas, more deer are killed by truckers and house wives in Maryland then any other means.

Most of the counties are shotgun only, to heavily populated to turn these guys loose with rifles!

The deer whistles do not work, tried them.

THEY DO NOT WORK

It's my turn to throw out a reason to listen me
Part of what I do is compile the annual car-killed deer statistics for the State of Wisconsin. I've got more information this topic than anyone would ever want to see and I can tell you that without any doubt, these whistles do not work.

It's quite basic: Deer do not hear the range of sounds emmited by the whistles. Pure and simple.

People who claim they work are wrong. This is what happens: People buy whistles. They install them and start to drive. They then begin to look for deer in order to see if they whistles work. They see a deer, slow down, and the deer eventually takes off. They then think the whistles work.

What's actually happened is that the driver stoped screwing around in the car and began looking for deer. And amazingly, they stop hitting them.

There were 45,702 repoted car killed deer in Wisconsin last year. A VAST majority of these could have been avoided very easily if people just did these 2 things:

Slow down
Pay attention

Yes, there are times when you just can't avoid them, but a good number of these collisions are due to people not paying attention to their surroundings. (no offense Dave, but this is a major factor around here)

And as an FYI, this is the data for the last 10 (state fiscal) years. We kill more deer with cars than some states do with guns.

2001 45,702
2000 47,555
1999 44,897
1998 41,829
1997 44,210
1996 46,395
1995 46,443
1994 39,249
1993 36,787
1992 35,888

Just food for thought; Compare those whistles to a flute or blowing accross a bottle neck to make a sound. It only works at an exact angle and an exact velocity. Even if deer can hear the sound, it would only work if you had them aimed exactly(no side wind or turbulance), and always drove the correct speed. If you still need convincing, try making a sound with a soda bottle, then duct tape it to the bumper and get it to work.

Douse the lights and hit the horn IF YOU HAVE TIME. They always seem to run when I do this. The one deer collision I've been in, you didnt have time to swear, much less do anything else.

The deer whistlers are $0.35 plastic pieces of junk.

Here in Colorado, we have this problem a lot also. Here is the only thing that seems to work; get your gun out, put it in the car, then try to find a deer to shoot! i'm not kidding... everytime you go and look for one, you will never find one!

283v8 has some good info, those little whistles are designed to operate only at certian speeds, and only then if you install them correctly, at the exact right angles. Also, the idea is to make noise for the deer to hear and run, but they get used to the whistles also so they don't scare them away anymore. Why do you think they don't run from cars anymore? They are used to hearing them.

Kurt's right, the only real way to be safe is to slow down and watch for them carefully, after all, you know they are out there...

I wonder how many deer were checked in for those years you have listed? It would be interesting to see the road kill ratio to hunter killed deer.

That dont work. Saw a couple as we were driving down a back road and hit the lights as we were about on them. They were covering the road and scattering but that last little guy couldnt make up his mind. We were braking and he was doing a little dance in the road....first left then right then in front of us. Never did freeze he just never made up his mind.

I do wonder how many deer just get dressed and not claimed? That ones left side was trash but the rest of him shure was tasty

I'll see what I can dig up. I don't have the kill figures, but I thin kkI can find them fairly easily.

Very few are taken and not reported in Wisconsin. If you hit a deer here, you can keep it. We'll issue a free tag and off you go. 11,608 people did last year alone. Over 150,000 in the past 10 years.

Ok, this is for Wally

Year Harvested Car Killed %
1980 160,578 22,120 14%
1981 195,756 23,635 12%
1982 213,565 28,269 13%
1983 230,476 30,406 13%
1984 294,617 34,599 12%
1985 315,046 28,183 9%
1986 299,730 32,493 11%
1987 293,181 34,253 12%
1988 305,817 33,101 11%
1989 356,586 34,313 10%
1990 399,331 31,760 8%
1991 419,617 35,888 9%
1992 349,298 36,787 11%
1993 270,592 39,249 15%
1994 373,883 46,443 12%
1995 467,271 46,395 10%
1996 461,732 44,210 10%
1997 359,628 41,829 12%
1998 407,555 44,897 11%
1999 494,116 47,555 10%
2000 615,393 45,702 7%

Havested includes all seasons, all weapons. % is car killed/Harvested.

WOW! In 20 years the number of hit by car has doubled and deer checked in has tripled. Man there are a lot of deer up there. Virginia is supposed to have the most dense deer population in the country, I wonder what the numbers are there???
