Well, I got bored after cleaning up the garage yesterday and I'm waiting on parts for the chevelle. I decided to tear into my little 307 and see just what killed it and if it could be rebuilt!

Took the intake manifold off and had my answer in about 3 seconds! There were chunks of the casting in lifter valley, water everywhere. I then noticed part of the lifter valley, was a HOLE!!! I took the timing cover off and the chain was sooo strecthed it came right off. When I took it off the front of the cam with the timing gear fell off:eek:

I then continued into the "teardown" with a hammer and chisel! All but a few of the lifters were siezed in their bores (just counting the ones that didn't fall to the pan when the lifter valley became a lifter canyon!).

The pistons were a nightmare!!! 90% of the rod bearings were spun in the rods instead of being indexed. When looking down onto the crank (engine flipped over) all of the main bearings were sort of mushroomed out on the driver's side! I have heard of crankshaft endplay but this had crankshaft lateral play!!! Almost all the rods had a slight curvature to them. It was insane!!

After going through it all it is pretty obvious that it had SEVERE block shift! I took a mic to the lifter bores and they were like an oval! also, I layed a 2x4 across the walls of the lifter valley (where the ends of the manifold sit) and the thing tipped bac and forth like 1/2"!! As to why, IDK but this engine was slapped in here by the previous owner and was one of the most poorly rebuilt engines have seen! But hey, it got me to and from work and school for the past 3 1/2 years (about 60,000 miles!) so I can't complain!

I have honestly never heard/seen a camshaft break!
I had a friend who built up a 350 for his '68 Camaro, put it in, had a few beers, and forgot all about breaking it in. 7500 rpm blasts down the road resulted in a 3/8s of a mile oil slick. The only thing salvaged from that engine were 2 water pump bolts. The cam was in a million pieces. One went throgh the carb and dented the hood!

My big-headed B-i-L's little Brother just under him blew up a '56, 265 one night while driving home!

It went BOOM running like 65 mph or so and he pulled over, shined a flashlight under her and saw this hole!!

Heck, he just got back in her, cranked her up and drove like 7 or 8 miles home running about 80 or so!!

Sucker never ran again, but it was tough for a while!

It always did have a TICK in it so we all figured it had a cracked oil groove/skirt deal that finally came undone! He ran the living dog-sh-t outta the little motor too, TICK and all until she finally let loose that night driving relatively easy for him down the road!

this is the first time i've heard of a 307 actually dying- but at least it died a glorious death. i know a few people that tried everything from putting a brick on the gas pedal to dumping sand in the crankcase to doing the "Prolong" test without the Prolong, and the little motors just kept on going.
they might not be powerhouses, but there is just something about them that makes them durable.

Yea, mine ran like a champ yet I always found myself tightening the rockers(to the point where I questioned whether or not I knew what I was doing!).

Then one day driving home it got a really rough idle and at stops I had to keep the rpms up. Literally as I was pulling into the driveway, my car and I were engulfed in smoke!!! Then a LOUD and I mean LOUD metal banging (like a dropping a brake rotor) and then nothing!! Thats what I love about this car, it has broken down a few times but has always gotten me home!

I was cleaning up the mess I made during dissassembly and decided to keep the block, I have an idea for it! I measured the cylinder bores and was blown away!! Mind you, this is a 307 block...it had a 4 INCH BORE!!! WTH!? That is a .125" overbore! I can't believe this thing actually lasted as long as it did!

Check the casting numbers. Its either a 327 or was bored out to one.

I heard it happen when my Pickup engine let loose. I had the crankshaft break right behind the first two cylinders. One of the counter balance weights sheared right in half. Talk about total distruction. Only part left usable on that engine was the intake, carb and headers. The cam was in about 5 chunks and most of the lifters were in the oil pan. Two rods broke off and one was sticking out the side of the oil pan and one was sticking out of the block. Looked like a bomb went off in there. I was driving about 70 down the freeway when it let loose. Talk about getting my attention. When I pulled over and opened the hood all I could see was the harmonic balancer sticking out the front of the engine sideways. I knew it was hurt bad. I guess it sereved me right it was a FORD. Good truck though and it was the third engine. Dang think lasted me 275K miles and I still sold it for more than I paid for it.
