Well, I got bored after cleaning up the garage yesterday and I'm waiting on parts for the chevelle. I decided to tear into my little 307 and see just what killed it and if it could be rebuilt!
Took the intake manifold off and had my answer in about 3 seconds! There were chunks of the casting in lifter valley, water everywhere. I then noticed part of the lifter valley, was a HOLE!!! I took the timing cover off and the chain was sooo strecthed it came right off. When I took it off the front of the cam with the timing gear fell off
I then continued into the "teardown" with a hammer and chisel! All but a few of the lifters were siezed in their bores (just counting the ones that didn't fall to the pan when the lifter valley became a lifter canyon!).
The pistons were a nightmare!!! 90% of the rod bearings were spun in the rods instead of being indexed. When looking down onto the crank (engine flipped over) all of the main bearings were sort of mushroomed out on the driver's side! I have heard of crankshaft endplay but this had crankshaft lateral play!!! Almost all the rods had a slight curvature to them. It was insane!!
After going through it all it is pretty obvious that it had SEVERE block shift! I took a mic to the lifter bores and they were like an oval! also, I layed a 2x4 across the walls of the lifter valley (where the ends of the manifold sit) and the thing tipped bac and forth like 1/2"!! As to why, IDK but this engine was slapped in here by the previous owner and was one of the most poorly rebuilt engines have seen! But hey, it got me to and from work and school for the past 3 1/2 years (about 60,000 miles!) so I can't complain!
