I'm assuming you have an internally regulated unit, and the one wire should come from the output stud on the back and go to the batt positive. This wire should be about an 8 guage. There should also be one wire going from the 2 prong plug on the side of the alt looping onto the same output stud. This is the one wire setup I use. To get it to start charging the throttle must be "blipped" to allow the regulator to self excite. approx 1100 rpm. Hope any of this helps.
