I think the astro van should have a 700r4 tranny, which will bolt up, but is about 3" longer than a turbo 350, so your driveshaft will need to be shortened. Does the van have a 4.3L V-6? If it does, it can be rebuilt strong enough, but in stock form, I think you might destroy it pretty fast. Do some searches on the 700r4, I'm rebuilding one right now for my chevelle, and there is lots of good information here. I think most important is to set up the TV cable to the carb, if its not adjusted right, you will burn it up.
Good Luck,
Steve

Yea, if it is the 4.3 it should bolt up OK. GM made some small bell housing 700's that won't bolt up to a small block. You should have it gone through or you will burn it out pretty quickly in stock form. 3-4 clutches are weak point and the stock insides need a lot of tweaks. Beast sunshell is a must, transgo shift kit and corvette servo's at a minmum along with fresh clutches. Rumor is that the 3-4 pack has fewer clutches in the v-6's but the one I took apart had a full cluch pack.
Ton of info in this form on these tranny's and plenty of people to give you tips if you need help.
Good luck
