I'm about ready to assemble my long block, but i need some help.
What do i need to hold the heads on. I'm going to use all ARP hardware on this engine, but should i get studs or bolts?
It is not a very mild street motor, but it's also not a hardcore race motor.
It's a 383. 10.7:1 compression, CompCams XE284 hydraulic, with AFR 195 heads.

Bolts would work, but studs would just make it that much stronger right?
Can you guys point me in the right direction?

ARP products are great. I think bolts would be fine also. Key points: 1. Make sure you follow ARP's torque specs, 2. make sure you use the correct lube specified by ARP. The torque values are different depending on the lube used. 3. Get a good torque wrench. The clamping ability of a bolt is only as good as your ability to torque it properly. I read a whole book on fasteners and that was the major summary of what I got out of it.

OK, just a few more questions that i just thought of. For Main Bolts, ARP makes regular bolts, and pro series bolts. The regular ones are rated at 170,000 psi, and the Pro series bolts are rated at 190,000 psi. Also the regulars are $25, and the stronger ones are $67.
Do i really need the 190,000 psi ones?

Also, for head bolts. should i get 6 point or 12 point?

I bought the "Hi-Perf" bolt set for my BB408 which is the 170,000psi set. They claim to be 15% stronger than stock.......before ARP came into existance, "stock" bolts held the heads on everything from Briggs&Stratton's to Top Fuel.............
