Had a TKO 600 in my 77 Nova. Installed it in 08. Loved the way it drove in town and on the highway. Never had any issues and the new owner is still driving it. I choose it because I wanted a manual transmission, an overdrive and something tough enough to live with the power the engine made. Have only 1 regret..I didn't put one in my Chevelle.

Yep TKO 600 bot from Jeff about 2004/5 before it was Hurst at the time needed a stronger trans to hold my motor with an OD still going but new motor will pbly break it so looking for tougher trans

TKO 600 in the 66. Wanted an overdrive and a stick. Set the car up with an S10 four cylinder T5 to learn the conversion, but that trans has poor ratios for a hot rod. V8 Chevy stuff was impossible to find, so the TKO was it. Picked the 600 over the 500 because the ratios seemed right and it will survive any upgrade, such as big block, that may come in the future. Did a T5 into my 89 Mustang this spring. Ford stuff is much easier to find.


The TKO 600 is the best mod I have done to the 66. Absolutely love it.

so what about the older 3550, TKO, & TKO-II MODELS
i had a 3550 that was great... >:)
i bought one of the first conversions, and made up stuff as needed:surprise:

I got a manual because I wanted a stick car. The T-56 makes sense for my application. I have 600 hp/590 lb*ft and 4.10 gears, and I bought the T-56 because it is tough and a double overdrive, which allowed me to keep my gears and still cruise at 2200rpm at 70mph. The T-56 has the 5th gear first overdrive @0.80, which is a nice step between 4th and the 0.64 6th gear.

I also bought the McLeod RST w/hydraulic throw out bearing. 3.5" aluminum driveshaft with 1350 joints was also installed for extra strength and higher critical speed.

It was a pain to install the T-56, not only because of the tunnel mods, but I also boxed my frame. I used the stock crossmember, narrowed it 6 inches, and located the trans mount to the bottom of the crossmember.

There was a lot of modification, but it was well worth the effort. The trans shifts very well, and the clutch pedal effort is very little. It is just a blast to drive! :thumbsup:

I went with T56. Installed some time around 2002.

I had a mechanical linkage T5.
A friend had a warranty take-out LT1 T56.
The challenge of converting it to mechanical fork release was fun.

I have a TKO 600 in my 72. Needs a better shifter though. Does anyone know if the Black Jack shifter will work in the 72 w/a console?

Not yet Ron. I was going to wait until this winter when I have more time, and my car. I gave my car to a body and paint guy that promised the car to be painted by mid May, and it is now at another shop because the first guy did nothing! I had it running, but decided to have a quick paint job done...hahahaha


Anyway, it'll be a big thread with a bunch of pictures. Well, if I can post pictures. I never have/had luck with posting pictures.

T-56 in my El Camino, looking at a TKO for the Chevelle when I get around to its next revision.

Not to but in here guys, but here is a write-up my brother did when he helped me 5+ years ago install my Tremec Magnum. There was nothing that I could find on the market at the time of my swap, so we designed and fabricated everything our selves.

The only change to my setup since this install was switching to a 4.56 rear gear instead of the 4.30's. With the cam I'm running and its overlap it makes the higher gears (5th and 6th) more usable when in the moderate speed ranges (45-60 mph). :yes: :thumbsup:

As far as the transmission, I love it. It changed the whole characteristics of the car. With the 4.56 gears, 30 inch rear tires in 6th gear, it cruises nicely at 70 mph at a little over 2200 rpm. It's fully syncoed. Shifts like a dream; very positive and has no issues shifting at 7000 rpm. :thumbsup: :yes:
