As I recently managed to make the topic of oil filter bypass valves difficult, thought I should ask about lifter valley oil shields. Moroso makes one for the big block with individual holes for each push rod, and GM makes one with that wedges between the heads but interferes with the intake manifold gasket unless the gasket is trimmed. Also a little concerned that the gasket will crush down to a height lower than the tabs that rest on the intake side of the cylinder head on the GM valley oil shield.

Any experiences on their value, in either style?

I trimmed the center tabs from my 454HO valley
The front and rear tabs will rest on a non-seating area of the manifold.

That's all I got

The shields assist in keeping hot oil from the underside of the intake manifold, therefore cooling the intake charge. Every little bit makes a difference.
They "assist" until the oil heats the tray enough to equal the oil temp ,then it's just another heat source under the manifold.
Don't take that wrong.
If you've towed to the track and your engine get's to cool down between run's ,it'll help.
If you take a trip of a few hundred miles ,the bottom of the intake isn't going to notice the tray being there as the temp has equalized.
I've seen better results at the track by just icing down the manifold between rounds.
The shield does help contain those loose valve train components when $hit happens :D
For the cost and time involved ,there still useful.

Use the GM one, it works well and as stated over a long trip it doesn't really matter, but at the track every little bit helps.

As also stated trim the shield to fit the gaskets, I have been using them for a long time.

Yes,an intake oil shiled is usefull and this one (pasted below)is by far the best oil shield out there for a bbc and its from gm parts direct for $14.29 + S&H.

I have installed these in 3 bbc's over the past couple yrs,very nice design IMHO.

Would there be any problem if I intalled both shields - the Moroso as its very close to the cam and helps to contain "shrapnel", and the GM as it is at the top of the lifter valley and could do more to stop heat transfer.

Its so much easier to buy GM parts than to return them for credit.

When I was installing my RPM intake a while nback I asked this question too. I recall being told that the moroso pan did not always fit correctly and you ended up having to grind/elongate some holes for the rods. I also asked about the tabs interfering and what seemed to work for me was to notch the gaskets as well as grind the tab thickness down to be sure it did not prevent the gasket from compressing. The last part may have bee overkill, but was easy and cheap insurance. (I used the GM pan). HTH.
