Is there any differences in 700R4 tranny's? Is there like a car version or truck version? I just bought a 1991 Camaro that needs a tranny. I have 2 700R4 tranny's at my house. I'm not sure what car or truck they both came out of. I haven't crawled under the Camaro yet to check it out. Just wondering if they will work in the Camaro. I know this aint no Camaro forum but I own 3 El Caminos and you all have helped me so much with them that I trust what you guys say. Will any 700R4 trans work in the 91 Camaro? Thanks alot.

I have tried to forget as much as possible about those transmissions, but I do know they arn't all the same. The early 80's transmissions had a different spline input shaft, and the late 80's 700's had a different style valve body. I think you will need a 1987-88 up style transmission. Also I think the camaro has that torque arm that runs from the transmission to the rear end. You can probably swap the tail housing to a different transmission.

No, not all the same. There are quite a few varieties.

There are a couple of different bolt patterns; the 60° 6-cyl one, the Chevy V8 one, maybe others.

Among V8 ones, the "core" is the same, within a given year, but there are many small differences in the governors, servos, and other parts.

Then there's all the year model differences like stock 48 mentioned; different # of splines on the input shaft, and various minor internal changes.

And like he said also, the F body needs the torque arm mount, which is part of the extension housing; you can just swap that over.

First, you need to determine the year. This is done by looking at the passenger side of the transmission just above the pan rail toward the back of the transmission. You will see a flat area about 2.25" long (front to back) and .550" high. There will be a code here, and the first digit you see (starting on the left) will represent the year. 1 = 1991, 8 = 1988, 5 = 1985, etc. You only want to use a late 1987 & up for performance use. The Camaro/Firebird will have a tail housing that has three bolts going through it sideways, to hold the torque arm, the trucks do not have this. The 1988 & up Camaro/Firebird transmissions have a different governor and valve body than the trucks. They offer higher WOT shifts points, and and higher speed downshifts, than the truck units. It all depends on what you want here?

Thanks for the info guys. The truck trans that I have has an 8 code on it. I guess it's an 1988 unit. I will just swap tail housings and try it out. Is there anything else I need to do or look for? Thanks.
