Just looking for some feedback here. We're moving into a new house that has no appliances in it, so I need a washer/dryer, dishwasher, stove, and fridge. Not looking to spend a ton of money but I realize that if you buy the cheapest thing available you get what you pay for.

If you want to help, tell me what you have and how long you've had it. I was reading reviews on appliances but then realized that if someone is going to write about how great their new appliance is, of course it will work great, it's brand new. I want the appliance you dropped off the truck on the way to the house, plugged it in 5 years ago, and he's still hummin! lol

I have a Maytag washer bought it new maybe ten years ago, I had it about two years and had to have it fixed 3 times then I started looking and found out Maytag cheapened them up.

So I would say negatory on a Maytag washer.

I probably have enough money in it I could have bought a new one, but it wasn't even three years and bingo, the repairman said there cheaper then they used to be starting from the pumps to whatever, more plastic and less metal.

Problem with your thoughts, is that you'd have to buy used appliances to get the same ones that worked well. Anything that is out for sale today wasnt around 5 years ago.
I was kind of thinking along the same line, why didn't I say something.:clonk::clonk:

We have a Jenn Aire (made by maytag at the time) Gas range, Maytag Refrigerator and a maytag washer. All of which are 10 years old and have performed flawlessly. The dishwasher is a GE Triton purchased at a HH Gregg tent sale 6 years ago?)and the dryer is a much older kenmore electric dryer (old enough I do not remember when we bought it lol)

I've never had trouble with Whirlpool anything. I have a dryer that is older than me and we had a temp switch replaced once, about 20 years ago.

A washer that is about 20 years old that I just replaced the agitator dogs and a balance spring in.

And in my other house, I had a newer Duet washer/dryer which performed flawlessly.

My current house was built in 1974 and I just replace the original dishwasher last year, and the fridge is still kicking.

We bought new Frigidaire appliances (refrigerator, gas stove and dishwasher) when we moved into our house 6 years ago. They are crap. After several service calls on the stove and dishwasher, we replaced them with Kitchen Aide about 3 years ago. We have spent several hundred dollars on repairing the refrigerator and will replace it the next time it needs repair. I would never buy any Frigidaire applicance. ( I am not sure but I think the Frigidaire appliances are not branded Electrolux.) The Kitchen Aide gas stove and dishwasher have been problem free so far.

If you have a Sears appliance any general repair shop will not work on them. 10 years ago we bought Amana washer, drier, stove, and frig. The frig is a bottom freezer. I didn't think I would like that but now would never buy anything else. The large top door allows easy access.
Dishwasher is a Bosh, 3 years old. I did lots of research on this. It is so quiet you have to listen to know it is running, well worth the price !!!!
Never a single problem with anything.

Do not get a front load washer, we have a sears high energy, and we are so sorry we have it. Clothes are twisted and at times it doesn't rinse all of the soap out of the clothes. We use less detergent then recommended and double rinse, it spins the clothes so fast it just a tangled mess. Yes it does use less water but I wish it would use more. Please try to stay away from a washer that has a lot of electronics for wash cycles, my daughter has a washer with a lot on it and she is always having problems with the cycles, keep it simple.
Dish washer, try to stay Whirlpool, it will make you happy because if the wife is happy your happy.

As mentioned, appliances aren't what they used to be even five years ago. I just bought a cheap scratch and dent dishwasher for $200.00 new. I mentioned to the sales guy "this doesn't have any of the eletronic touch pads or anything". "No it doesn't and that means alot less things to break". These cheapy's don't come back for repair he said. I bought it.......time will tell.

Don't buy Maytag! I used to buy everything Maytag and now Maytag takes everything money from me! They are nothing but a hole-in-the-pocket and take no responsibility for their poor quality.

Talked to their service reps at 1800-whocares a couple of times when our 1 yr old Dishwasher went on the fritz. Mr. Notsofriggennice on the other end told me I should have bought an extended warranty! Refused to acknowledge that they had any responsibility to the product other than to fix them under warranty.

Now-a-days I never miss the opportunity to tell folks what a POS they are!

When we built our house, Sears had a site for contractors that we we're able to use because we needed 3 or more major appliances. Try this site and see what happens http://http://www.contractsales.sears.com/comsale/appliance/applcat/applcat.htm That was back in 1989 (yes, 20 some years ago) and I have no idea if it is still available or not. We got a wall oven (still works fine), electric stove top (not real impressed, would have gone gas if I do it again) dishwasher (replaced long ago) and Maytag fridge that has been delagated to the garage and holds"beverages". By the way, I bought a Whirlpool drier in 1981 that still works with some minor repairs over the years. Also have a Whirlpool front load washer that Cathy hates for reasons already mentioned. Find what you want and compare prices on the contractor site. We saved a ton of money way back when.:)

There's an awful large selection of every kind of appliance out there and there are probably 1,000,000 opinions of them too.

I could recommend doing 2 things:
Do some research

  • Take a trip to the stores and start looking at the actual items available. Look at the features, make a list of needs, wants, and extra features that might be nice to have.
  • It's worth a trip to the library to look at their Consumer's Reports. It may be an imperfect effort, but as they collect a large amount of information from both consumers and testing, why even look at the ones at the bottom of the list?
  • There are also numerous websites that collect info from people (ePinions as an example). Again, if they have a "top" group, why bother with the lower half.
  • Unfortunately many of the best reports are on models that have been replaced with a new one. Like cars they have new ones each year, so don't get too mired down in model vs. model. Instead gather brand vs. brand.
Look for a store that offers a large selection

  • Armed with your group of best brands, go look at their websites, especially their closeouts. I found an $800 KitchenAid dishwasher in the Sears closeout section. No dents, no scratches. A perfect NIB version, $419 delivered (after the $49 delivery rebate). As another mentioned, don't be afraid of looking at floor models/scratch & dent items. They haven't been washing any clothes in them.
  • Determine which stores have an acceptable group of the appliances (a choice of several models by brands with the best records).
  • Take your list in, tell them what you are looking for, (especially any closeout items because they may NOT be on display.). Also be on the lookout for someone who is "pushing" a select brand. There may be some "incentive" on the table.
  • If the store can assemble the whole group to your satisfaction, ask them what the final price is for everything, inc, delivery, any installations, and tax.
  • Ask for a discount. You are going to be spending as much as you would for a decent used car, so it's your privilege to ask. The worst that could happen is they'll say no.
  • If the salesperson says "I can't", ask for the Manager. Tell the Manager you want a discount. A savvy manager will know exactly what they have, what they can discount w/o catching any flack, all of the extra discounts they could offer, how to do that, and the best bottom line available.

I would avoid the Frigidaire stuff. I used to work for Poulan-Weedeater, which is owned by the same company that owns Frigidaire ( Electrolux from Sweden, not the US one). We got killer deals on Frigidaire appliances. Every person I met that had bought them was disapppointed in them. Some of them (like my dryer) need to have the loose parts in the shipping carton re-installed on the appliance. Back when GM owned Frigidaire, they were the absolute best, but not now. GE appliances have worked ok for me. My last GE washer went about13 years and developed an oil leak in the transmission. The dryer is 16 years old , but gets used only on cold rainy days, so it is pretty low on hours of use.

I picked up a set of Electrolux front loader washer and dryer last year, after a lot of research. I looked at front loaders for a couple years, but always resisted because I'd write down the model number and go home to read reviews. They were usually all bad. The Electrolux set was the only brand that had way more positive comments than negative. Probably 50-60 positives to 1 negative, no kidding. Comments from people who used them in care homes, where they're used for 4-5 loads a day, 7 days a week, for a couple of years, no problems. The only negative comments I saw were a couple of them didn't work right out of the box. Exchanged for new ones, no problems.

Frigidaire, Maytag, and a few others are on my never buy again list, though. Pure junk.

I've got another question, though. Thinking of replacing my stove with a new one, it's old, and hard to read the display/timer for the oven. I'd like a convection oven, but I'm leery of the glass cooktops and electronics on all the new models. Are the glass cooktops to be deemed reliable these days, that you can get 10 years or more out of them?

avoid GE like the plague.

I've had really good luck with Maytag, and their generic brand, Admiral. Unfortunately, Maytag was bought out by Whirlpool. I think Whirlpool is considered pretty decent stuff though.

I would go simple. The simpler the better. The trend has been toward big complex things with buzzers and whistles and circuit boards. The circuit boards go out and they WON'T sell you the new part, so you have to call a repair man. Total BS.

Our W&D is 12 years old, Maytag. I;ve had to repair each over the years. The latest was a broken drum bracket on the dryer. Total cost was zero, since I just welded the bracket. Other stuff, maybe $50 total in parts. Not bad considering I only paid $180 for the set at an auction.

Fridge is a Frigidaire we got at Sears in 2001, runs like a champ. The stove in the new house is a GE and I friggin hate GE, it's a lousy stupid design. Would have kept the old one but it was gas and the new one is electric. That was a GE too but it was a very simple basic design, just turn the damn thing on to the temp you want and when you're done, turn it off. So simple a moron could do it.

Microwave was a GE and that **** the bed so we replaced it with a Hotpoint, which has lasted 8 years now. Dish washer in the old place was a GE that **** the bed after a year and two days and I replaced it with the bare bones Admiral which runs so well I'm thinking of swapping it for the crappy GE thing in our new house.

ANyway, buy simple basic appliances, I'd try to get Maytag or Whirlpool
