I looked through the "sticky" but did`nt find what I was looking for. I know several people here are running the 275-40-17 but I want to keep a 28" tall tire and the 275-50-17 is about the right size. I`ve got 275-60-15`s on my 65 now. I`m thinking about a 17x8 wheel with a 5" backspacing. Another wheel option is a 17x9.5 with a 5.5" backspacing. I`ve already got the front wheel/tire size figured out but I`m not sure if these would fit. Anyone know? Thanks.

Since you're already running a 28" tall 275 tire w/o problems,a 17" tire in that width and diameter should be fine. If you will check out David Bates' entry on page three of the Tire & Wheel database,he's running a 17x9.5 rear wheel with 5.625" backspacing and 285/40 tire on his 65.

I saw his entry and even pm`ed him once about it. I`m pretty sure they would fit but I wasn`t sure since the rim would be taller, even though the tire height would be the same. I know sometimes that the bigger diameter wheels can rub on the shock mounts or whatever is in the way. Thanks for your input.

Actually,15" wheels can get really close to the lower mount. 17's and bigger diameter wheels clear the shock mount easily and allow more backspacing.
Yeah your right. I was thinking about it the other day and thought the 17`s might fit better. I don`t have the car with me to take measurements. I might end up sticking with the 15`s because I can`t find the tire size I want. Nitto use to have them in a performance tire and a drag radial but I haven`t been able to find them. Thanks.

17's are a problem if you want anythin in the 27" - 29" tall range. Your either stuck with 35 - 40 series (45's in the smaller sizes) that come in at 26" or less or you jump up to 30" tall sport truck tires. I have 285-50/20's on my truck - 31.22 tall. This is a real fat tire with a wide foot print that would be ideal in a 17" version (28.2" tall).

The 275-50-17 is about 28" which is what I`m trying to stick with. I need to contace Nitto I guess to see if they are still available. I don`t want to go with a 26" tire because my car will have 4.11`s in about a month. I`m not worried about gas mileage or freeway rpms, but I think the shorter tire would make the gearing too low for my set up.

blumont, they were on the car when I got it but they are 15x8 custom rallys with I think a 4.5" backspacing. The fender lip is trimed and so is the outerwheelhouse(inner fender well) near the 1/4 panal. If a 5" backspacing was used I don`t think you would have to trim the wheel house. They fit nice but are a pain in the ass to get off the car since the tires are so tall.

Nitto's site lists an NT450 in a 275/50/17 that's 27.88" tall. It's an all-season HP tire that is what you're looking for.

I`ll have to look into that one. The one I was looking for was a NT555 which I think might be a drag radial. I knoe the NT555R is for sure. 27.88 is close enough to 28" for me. I`ll have to go to the site. I`m usually only online during my 10 minute breaks at work and for some reason, I spend most of my time here instead of looking for the parts I need, lol. Thanks.
