I've been living with pain and discomfort for three years now. Went into a hospital and saw three doctors. My energy level has gone down hill this past year and it's gotten worse.

Well, today, after some prodding from my wiser and better half, went to see a new doctor in town. I explained my situation and he prodded around my belly until he hit the spot OWCH! Follow up ultra sound and Cat scan verified gallbladder.

Think I'm getting it removed on Friday. What should I expect?

Jimmy,
My sister-in-law had hers removed as well. I'm not sure this happens to everyone, but she can't eat certain food anymore. I think things that contain starch or something like that. I can't remember. They do laprascopic surgery and you shouldn't be in the hospital too long. I sure do hope you get much better after the surgery.

Surgery is really nothing at all. If you havent had a surgery before they make only 3 small incisions. What they dont tell you is that you will live on Metamucil the rest of your life or else ..... this part we wont talk about. I still felt nauseated for a few months but it went away. No worries and good luck !!! I am facing back surgery now, not good at all...

Both my wife and I had ours removed. Thepainwas pretty bad. We both spent the night and was home the next day. We had it done laproscopicly.3 small incisions is all. not much pain after wards.
The big change is the diet. you will want to stay away from greasy food. It's healthier anyways.

Funny, I had mine removed, pain was fairly minor, back to work in 4 days (dr said 7). Don't have problems with food with the exception of very occasionally a heavy meat meal (large steak) can cause some discomfort. Other than that, no problems!

I've been lucky so far and haven't had a big flareup in a while. Just have to watch my diet. That said. My mom and three of my sisters had theirs removed and all were up and around in a short time, well except my mom but hers was removed the old fashioned way!:D

Hey! Make sure they label you! A lady my wife worked with a few years ago went in for a knee replacement and came out without a gallbladder! Lucky her doctor noticed the wrong paitient for knee replacement but by then the gallbladder was already out! They actually only found out she wa the wrong gallbladder patient when the husband came into the recovery room and said "who the hell is this and where is my wife"! In the prep room the charts were hung on the wrong gurnies. This was before they started barcoding patients! She got a pretty good chunk of change for that mistake plus the surgury was free!(for the hospitals part on the knee too:D)

I had it done last year. Talk about pain. HOLY SHEEP. They did lapriscopy and I left the hospital in no pain. Well, when I got home I was in more pain then before the surgery. I was out of work a month. Something about puking up bile for 3 weeks straight didn't sit right with me. Ended up my sphincter of odie (yeah keep laughing lol) was still producing a lot of bile and it just sat in my stomach. Now I'm fine - I eat whatever I want and have no issues :) Good luck and let us know how it turns out!

An episode that comes and goes is on thing. 12 years ago I fought the solid intense upper right quadrant/mid back pain for almost two years. Finally I felt the end was near, literally. I was throwing up, had fever, chills, lack of bowel motion, the same intense non-relenting pain, not only that, I was starting to turn yellow. I threw in the towel, called my brother inlaw and had him drive me to the ER. Turns out I really was in pretty bad shape and needed emergency care. An MRI turned up a gall stone about the size of a marble lodged mid way in my Bile duct. They tried an Endoscopic procedure that didn't work. So I got the old fashion Cholecystectomy (lost my perfect six-pack;) ) and for my trouble got to stay in the ICU for 2 weeks due to the Liver and Pancreatic damage I had done and got to wear a Bile bag that needed emptying every 8 hours or so for 8 weeks afterward. Recovery was slow and drawn out, I went in weighing 243lbs, benching 405lbs and came out at 212lbs weak as a kitten and had trouble walking up and down my street, my stamina was gone. It took about 1.5 years to get back to normal. Had I known what I know now I would have never gone on so long being a tough guy. Your lucky if you can get the Laparoscopic procedure but even it comes with its issues. This is very important, MAKE sure you discuss with your Doctor the symptoms of Post-op internal bile duct leakage. If you spike a fever and have discomfort get back in asap. At this time I'm pain free unless I do sit-ups then I pay for it with some discomfort inside were I was stitched back together. I eat what I want, but be warned sometimes number two can get urgent. Lol.

Thanks for the info.....I think. I guess my choises are limited. For the past couple of years and even right now it feels like a 200 lb guy sitting on my chest, so I guess I'll have to face the post surgury crap because I can't live like this anymore.

I was really making progress on stripping my Chevelle too. Now it's in bare metal. Oh well!

Had mine removed about 3 years ago. If I didn't know it was gone, I would never miss it. I've changed nothing about my diet or lifestyle.

The only way I know its gone is that my shoulder dosn't hurt all the time now. (I know thats wierd, but shoulder pain is one of the first systems I had and the doctor said that was one of the main complaints of folks with gall bladder problems).

You'll be fine.
