Painted engine compartments look nice on modified cars and ones with late model fuel injected engines in them IMO. It brings out the detail in the engine more.
I also think shock towers vs. inner fenders makes a difference as well. Cars like early Novas look like they should have body colored panels, whereas the seperate inner fenders on Chevelles flow differently from the firewall.
