I've got the "old" i710 walkie talkie phone and it's starting to mess up on me. I was wondering if anyone knew if it was possible to save all my numbers to my chip? I've done it before on another phone, but it wasn't a Motorola/Nextel phone. Thanks!

The i710 is like all Nextel phones with a SIM card. Your phonebook/contacts are saved on the SIM card so you can just swap it over to your new phone and all your saved information will be there.

The sim cards are not all swappable. I went from an I90 to an I830 and the cards were no interchangeable. However, the store uploaded all of my info for free. My wife has the I730, and while it is slightly larger than my I830, it seems to have a little better reception/range.

If you buy the new one at the retail store they have a setup to swap it over for you via a pc, and charge $15 unless it's a warranty swap.

What Ted said.

Although they all have a SIM, the SIM isn't necessarily swappable between the phones. Quick guide is that the SIM from a TWO digit phone (i90, i95c, etc-etc) can be swapped to other 2 digit phones, but not into a THREE digit phone (i730, i836, etc).

In actual practice, a 2 digit phone SIM will work in a 3 digit phone for basic calling, but many of the common features won't work. Not worth the hassle.

Two things you can do. You can set up you account on the Nextel.com website and download the address book from your current phone to the web site. Once you have your new phone you go back to the website, change the model number of your phone, then upload your newly formatted address book to the new unit. Setting yourself up on the website take a little time upfront but it's much easier to manage all your contact info in the event you tend to make lots of frequent changes.

Or, as suggested, just take the old unit into the store and have them do the dirty work.

Like any mobile phone - from any carrier, some models perform better than others. In Nextel's case (Motorola supplies all Nextel units) I90's were good, I730's not as good.

The above link is to the phones. on this page there is also an "upgrade your phone" link. Walks ya though how to do it. Works.

The i850 is a nice unit and there's a very attractive deal on it right now via the website ($40 less than if purchased in one of the stores). The i836 is also a nice unit and among the nicest looking flip phones I've ever seen - has a nice mat finish to it. That's the one I'd have. Also remember that smaller isn't always better. The i830 is a good phone that looks fantastic but for many people it doesn't fit their hand well.

Best to hit one of the stores, look at 'em, then do the deed online. Remember also that Sprint and Nextel just merged so all the info you see will mostly say Sprint.

Good luck, lemme know if ya have any questions.

Yeah, I was on Nextel/Sprint's page last night looking thru all the different phones. I really like the i850, but I don't have a "spare" $120 to buy a new phone (regularly they're about $160 or so). What I was basically trying to do was just put my current sim card into the other i710 I have (I got two phones/lines in my plan and the other i710 isn't being used anymore), but for some reason, all my info/phone numbers didn't show in the good/working i710. I guess you can say that I "suffer" from cell phone rage, lol. I'm just soo tired of cell phones that don't work, i.e. no signal, doesn't connect, etc. My i710 was working pretty good, and I was happy with it. But time after time of no signal for the walkie talkie, or the losing the signal while talking got me frustrated. With other phones I've had, I've gotten so mad that I'd throw them across the room, or on the floor cause I'd figure if they didn't work when I wanted them to, then I'll give them a real reason not to work :p I know, I know, stupid way of thinking, I gotta learn to control my "rage" lol. Anyway, about a week ago, I was using the walkie talkie and it kept losing the signal and giving me that annoying beep that says something about the user not being there or something along the lines of that. So I got a lil PO'd and bang the back of the phone on the shifter of my car. After that it worked LOL Then I started noticeing that the phone just starting turning off on its own, until the point where it just doesn't want to turn on now. I've managed to get it to turn on by taking the battery and sim card out, then banging the hell outta it. By as time passes, it's been getting harder to get it to turn on. So that's when I figured I'd just use the other i710 that's not being used anymore. But it seems as if my numbers weren't saved to the sim because they don't show up on the good phone. I've got insurance on the phone, but I don't think they'll give me another phone after seeing the dents in my phone :p I've been told by some friends to just tell them that the phone was lost, but, I don't really want to have to lie, I don't like that. So yeah, now that we're caught up, if worse comes to worse, I'll just go to Nextel's site and download my numbers there and upload them to the "new" phone, if it's possible. If that doesn't work, then I guess I'm gonna have to mess with the old phone, get it to turn on, then write all the numbers out on paper and re enter them to the working phone. I hope it doesn't come down to that. If all else fails, then, I guess I'll have to buy a new phone. Not sure how I'm gonna do that since it seems like I'm always broke, but I guess I'll have to charge it or something. Thanks everyone for the responses and help. If anyone knows if there is a way that I can just save all my numbers to the sim, which to me would be the easiest thing if possible, please let me know, thanks again!

LXS,

SIM swapping has gotten more difficult with the newer, 3 digit series, phones. Nevertheless, the SIM from your old and abused 710 should work just fine in your unused 710. If it's not working correctly you may want to give CS a call to see if they can help. May have to do a master reset on it or something first.

As far as using the web. In order to get your contact list uploaded to the web your existing phone must be on. When you tell the web site to get your contact list it sends a request to the phone and the phone will ask for you to grant permission for the info to be sent back to the web. Likewise when you send a contact list from the web to the phone.

Correct. Beating on it won't improve the reception and typically makes it worse. There are numerous grounds inside the thing and the one that grounds the antenna to the frame is vunerable to repeated impacts.

Regards,

Dan

I just wanted to thank everyone one last time, and to tell everyone that I just had the BIGGEST brain fart in the world!!! LOL :D :D :D Stupid me was pressing the down arrow, which shows me the person that I talked/called last. I had confused the "last call" screen with the "contact" screen :clonk: I totally forgot that I had to click on contacts to see my list of numbers...HAHAHAHAH :clonk: I guess I was soo used to just hitting the down key to call whoever I needed, and kinda freaked out that it was blank. So anyway, once again, a big thanks to all who gave me advice and feedback! You guys are wonderful! :D :D :D
